Gladstone’s Library’s competitive Writer in Residence 2018

Now seeking applicants for its seventh year, Gladstone’s Library’s competitive Writer in Residence programme provides space and resources for four writers whose work engages with liberal values. By liberal values, we do not mean views aligned with any one political ideology, but rather:
  • a commitment to freedom and social justice;
  • tolerance and respect of difference;
  • open-mindedness coupled with intellectual curiosity;
  • generosity of spirit and a willingness to learn from others.

Through reflection and writing during their stay, Writers in Residence help us redefine liberal values for the 21st Century. Their engagement might be critical, supportive or merely observant. Gladstone was a polymath with interests ranging widely across religion, history, social justice and politics from Classical times to what was, for him, contemporary culture. The scope of these four residencies is equally wide and we welcome fiction and non-fiction writers.

Four places will be awarded to writers working in the English language. The proposed dates of the tenures are February, May, September and November 2018. We like to support writers as best we can and we know that many cannot simply abscond from regular life for a month. Residencies can therefore be taken in two two-week blocks, and residencies of a single fortnight will also be considered. We are also flexible with dates. Please indicate the length and suggested date of Residency on your application.

Writers at all stages of their career should feel able to apply for Residency. We are proud to say that Residencies have supported some of the finest writers in the English language, whether they won for their seventeenth book or their first.

Each residency includes:
  • Accommodation in an ensuite room for a period of four consecutive weeks;
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and refreshments (telephone calls, alcoholic drinks, packaged snacks and formal Afternoon Tea are not included);
  • Travel expenses to and from the Library at the start and end of the residency (HMRC mileage allowance or standard bus/train fares within the UK);
  • An honorarium of £100.00 per week.

Each winning author must:
  • Attend the official London prizewinning ceremony on Monday, 2nd October 2017;
  • Participate, where possible, in any other publicity events held before or after their residency;
  • Respond to media/press enquiries as appropriate and by prior agreement with the library’s warden, Peter Francis;
  • Submit two blog posts to the Gladstone’s Library website;
  • Lead a creative writing workshop to not more than twenty participants;
  • Give an evening talk about any aspect of their writing and/or creative life;
  • Abide by the normal terms and conditions for guests staying at Gladstone’s Library. 
Terms and Conditions:

Entrants must submit a one page CV/biography, a copy of the book they would like the judges to consider, a 250-word statement about their take on (re)defining ‘liberal values’ and 250-words on the work that they plan to do at the Library as well as their proposal for an evening event and day masterclass.

Submissions must be written in English, and applicants should be able to communicate fluently in English. Prose fiction and non-fiction, poetry, screenplays and drama are all eligible for submission. Submitted texts must have been published in the last three years. We accept manuscript submissions accompanied by evidence of a contract and publishing schedule. Academic monographs are not eligible for Writer-in-Residence and should be submitted to the Library’s scholarship programme. We do not accept self-published authors of any kind. No correspondence can be entered into. Entry is free and limited to one entry per author. You cannot enter under a pseudonym. Winners will be notified by the end of September and invited to a launch event at the National Liberal Club on Monday, 2nd October 2017. Winners agree to take part in publicity activity and abide by Library rules during tenure.

5th Theatre Brut Short-Play Festival

New Jersey Repertory Company invites playwrights to submit plays for its 5th Theatre Brut Short-Play Festival. The theme of the festival is “All About Eve”. 

Submitted works must be new, previously unproduced, unpublished, and no more than 10-15 minutes in length. Cast size should not exceed 4 (including any musicians). 

The actual performance areas will be small, so keep the setting simple and prop requirements modest. Plays can be dramatic, comedic, musical, monologue, or whatever sparks your interest. 

The deadline for submissions is May 30, 2017.

Although the theme is specified, they are not prescriptive with regard to style, and how you interpret the theme is the province of each playwright. Keep in mind that Theatre Brut seeks to foster “the creative impulse unfettered by social and artistic convention” so let your imagination soar and be adventurous. If you have ever aspired to "experiment" or stretch the boundaries of theater, this is the time to do so.

Make sure you include the full script, a brief synopsis, character description, and playwright bio. In the subject line put “Theatre Brut submission”.

Prior festivals have received 250-300 submissions and approximately 25 plays are chosen for each event. There is no compensation and playwrights retain all copyright of their works. By submitting, playwrights agree that in future presentations and publications NJ Rep and Theatre Brut will be listed as premiering the work.

Performances will be October 1 - October 8th at NJ Rep - West End Arts, Long Branch, NJ and will be supplemented by other arts events including poetry readings, an art show, photography exhibit, and other events to be announced.

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg Fifth Annual One-Act Playwriting Competition

Shakespeare in the ‘Burg is pleased to announce our fifth annual one-act playwriting competition, in conjunction with our Shakespeare in the ‘Burg theater festival. Dates of the 2018 festival will be announced on our website. The festival will be held at The Hill School, Middleburg, VA. There is no fee for this competition. We will choose three winners and each will have a staged reading during the Shakespeare in the ‘Burg festival. The readings will be performed by Shakespeare in the Square acting company from New York City.

Please note that you can write in any style you choose; this is not a “Shakespeare” writing competition, so plays in any genre are welcome.

Also new for 2018: The staged readings will be videotaped so if winners can’t be present, they will still be able to see their plays performed by skilled actors.

Please bear in mind that your script will be performed for an audience of all ages.

Competition Rules:

  • Open to all playwrights
  • Scripts must be original. Musicals, monologues, film scripts and television scripts are not eligible.
  • Running times of no less than 25 minutes and no more than one hour.
  • No more than one submission per playwright. Give us your best work!

The MTB Audio Drama Scriptwriting Competition celebrates good old-fashioned storytelling with a $250 first prize and $100 second-place prize. All genres considered and authors retain all script rights.

There’s no fee for entry. We simply ask the following:
  • Please keep to one entry per author.

  • Please keep the script “family friendly”

About the Program
The Writing Fellowship is at the heart of what we do: helping writers write. Four early-career playwrights receive nine months of resources, readings and feedback designed to help them reach their professional and artistic goals. Over the course of the season, Fellows develop a single new play. Monthly group meetings provide a collaborative, energizing space for writers to share and refine their work. One-on-one meetings with The Realm’s artistic staff support each writer’s specific artistic process. Fellows work with a director, design consultant, and actors over the course of two readings to see their work come to life. Professional development resources are also integral to the program and are tailored to meet the needs of each Writing Fellow. Mentor opportunities, meet-and-greets, and professional seminars are designed to shed light on the business of theatre, and empower the Fellows to be active, informed participants in their own careers. The culminating event of the program is our INK’D Festival, which features a public reading of each Fellow’s play.

What We’re Looking For
Above all, we look for dedicated early-career writers who crave a long-term, rigorous development process. We value intellectual curiosity, imagination and bravery. We love plays with evocative language, plays that contemplate big, unanswerable questions, that embrace the complexity of life, and demonstrate an understanding of the possibilities of dramatic storytelling. And of course, plays that are inherently theatrical—that could never be anything other than a play!

Program Criteria

Playwrights must be able to attend meetings and readings in New York City approximately twice monthly from September 2017 through May 2018.

Playwrights should identify as early-career.

Those enrolled in an MFA program during the span of the fellowship are not eligible.

Plays to be considered for the fellowship should be complete drafts at a stage of development that would benefit from a nine-month rewriting and workshopping process.

Plays should have no commitments to other theaters that will limit their development with Playwrights Realm.

Plays going through another similar development process simultaneously, or that have had a production outside of an academic environment, are not eligible.

We are not looking for solo performance projects at this time.

2017 ROCKFORD NEW PLAY FESTIVAL

The 2017 Rockford New Play Festival is seeking submissions of new ten minute plays. 

Six scripts will be chosen as official selections of the festival and presented in an evening of staged readings in Rockford, Illinois on August 24, 2017. Each of the six playwrights will receive $150 and a link to a video recording of the reading. The 2017 New Play Festival Reading will also be broadcast live on Facebook.

This year, we invite you to share a play inspired by the question: “In light of the recent Women’s March on Washington, ‘Where Are You Going?’” We encourage you to be bold, passionate, and most importantly, yourself.

There is no entry fee. Please follow these rules:

Theme: plays must be relevant to this year’s theme: “In light of the recent Women’s March on Washington, 'Where Are You Going?'”

Language: Plays must be written for English speaking audiences.

One play per playwright will be accepted.

Originality: Submissions must be original and playwrights must be the copyright holder. Translations and adaptations will not be accepted.

Eligibility: Plays that have been professionally produced or published, or which are under consideration for production or publication, are not eligible.

Plays submitted to The Rockford New Play Festival in previous years will not be considered.

Dear Friend in the Theatre,
MITF: Summer is now entering its eighteenth season. Our Midtown location is safe, clean, convenient, and close to the offices of industry members. It is the Festival of tomorrows' producers today! We set ourselves apart from other festivals because: (1) we are the Festival where new producers work alongside seasoned pros and (2) we have implemented a new Profit Sharing Policy (PSP).* Every play now has the opportunity to earn their piece of the pie!

MITF: Summer is a combination of full-lengths, short plays, and musicals, children's plays, a Variety division (Magic Acts, Improv, Stand-up, Cabaret, Sketch Comedy, etc), the Short Play Lab (maximum 10-minutes), and staged readings. (There is a $250 fee for Staged Readings).
We're looking for any kind of play or musical that fits our guidelines but
plays and musicals 30-45 minutes long are really the heart and soul of MITF: Summer and are given the number one priority. Our prioritized list of running times follows:* Short Subjects and musicals 30-60 min. long.
* Full-lengths and musicals 61-90 min. long.* Musicals 91 - 120 min. long.
No matter the length of your play or musical, the following guidelines are applicable:
* Easy to produce in a no-frills festival.
* AEA showcases are welcome.
* Any genre. (Short subjects using guns as props will not be considered; full-lengths can use guns as props).
* Plays must be sent in Word Document or PDF File.
* Pages MUST be numbered and script must be in standard playscript format.**
* The estimated running time of the play must be clearly indicated.

The Festival will take place at the Workshop Theater's Main Stage and Jewel Box Theaters, 312 W. 36th St., NYC. MITF: Summer runs from July 15-August 6, 2017.The Festival provides the WorkShop Theater's Main Stage and Jewel Box Theaters, shared scenery (rehearsal cubes, a table, and 4 chairs), and front-of-house staff. Shows must be off book and provide their own board operator, stage manager, and company manager.

Does the work need to be religious or pertaining to spirituality? No, though the work does need to be in good taste for a religious setting.

Will preference be given to PAUMC members? No. Every single submission will be evaluated with equal regard.

Does the work need to be new? Yes. We are asking for work written with the theme “Cracks in the Wall” in mind.

What do I need to submit? You must submit whatever you think best represents your work, whether that is a mp3, your script or poem, a thorough proposal, or a video. You must also submit your application form.

What kind of art will be accepted and are there any limitations? Any kind as long as it’s original and in good taste for a religious setting: Visual, theatre, musical, film, poetry, dance, spoken word poetry, short stories. If the work is presented live it cannot exceed 10 minutes. The work will be presented in a hall so please take that into consideration.

Do the artists have to pay for a ticket? No. The artists get to attend for free.

Do the artists have to pay for anything? There are no fees associated with participation in the project.

How old must I be to submit? We accept submissions from artists of all ages.

How will you choose who presents their work? Each entry will be examined by a panel of 3 judges and graded on a shared scale. The artists who submitted the entries that rank the highest will be asked to present their work.

9TTC produces works that incorporate environmental issues as part of the part, characters, or theme. We are uniquely dedicated to Eco Theatre, connecting humanity and nature, in various forms.

We accept original one acts, and full length plays and musicals.

We do not accept one-person shows, children's shows, screenplays, or works without environmental themes. 9Thirty Theatre Company also does not produce works that have already been produced in New York City.

APAC SEEKS SCRIPTS FOR 24TH ANNUAL ORIGINAL PLAY FESTIVAL

Aloha Performing Arts Company has announced its request for new stage plays which have not been published or produced, for its 24th annual Original Play Festival, which will be presented August 16-19 at the historic Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, on the “Big Island” of Hawaii. 

 Scripts of any length and on any subject will be accepted, and must be received by May 10, 2017. 

 Due to the limited preparation time for the festival, musical entries will not be accepted.

Entries must be submitted electronically in Word or PDF format to opf@apachawaii.org

 The script file must contain a list of characters and a brief description of the play, but should not contain the playwright’s name. A separate file must also be submitted and must include the title of the play and the playwright’s name, address, phone numbers, and email address. This helps to insure anonymity in evaluation and selection. Authors retain rights; APAC performance rights are limited to the dates of the festival. Scripts will be posted on APAC’s website during the selection process to facilitate access by the OPF XXIV Selection Committee. Entries must be received by May 10, 2017.

Plays will be mounted as staged readings, with minimal rehearsal, actors holding scripts, and simple technical presentation. The committee’s official selections will be made by mid June; notifications will be made by late June; auditions for actor/readers will be held in early July; rehearsals will be conducted from mid July to mid August, and the festival will be presented at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu August 16-19, 2017. A wrap up discussion and celebration will be held Sunday afternoon, August 20, at which time the “Opie” award will be presented. This is a people’s choice honor bestowed on the best script of the festival, as determined by popular vote of audience members. The Opie award winning script will be presented to APAC’s season planning Kokua committee for consideration as a possible future mainstage production. For more information, call 808-322-9924.

RULES OF ENTRY

• The contest is open to all playwrights.
• The contest is for new full-length plays for young audiences. No musicals nor

The following guidelines apply to submissions for our Festival of New Theatre, Plays in Progress and general production consideration.


Playwrights with professional representation may have their agents send full manuscripts at any time. Please note that lawyers and law firms do not qualify as professional representation.

To best accommodate our schedule of new play activities, we have an Open Submissions Window, during which playwrights who are not working with an agent may send a submission inquiry. The dates of this year’s window are January 1 to April 30, 2017.
Before submitting a play for consideration, please look at our production history and at the lists of new plays we have commissioned or produced, as an indication of the kind of work we are likely to produce.

Please do not send us the first draft of a play. Due to the number of scripts we receive, we can only read any play one time, so make sure you are sending us your best work. Plays for consideration in our play development series must not have had more than one production at another theatre.

To have your play considered, submit the following:
  • A cover letter introducing yourself, with your full contact information.
  • Your creative resume and a development or production history of this play. If the play has had other developmental readings or productions, they must be included here.
  • A description of this play, no more than ½ page. This need not be a summary of the plot – we welcome a description of the play’s world, characters and conflict, and your reasons for writing it.
  • A complete list of characters.
  • A ten-page dialogue sample. Pages do not need to come from the beginning of your text but must be sequential.

After reviewing your query, we will let you know whether or not we wish to read the entire script. Agents submitting plays should expect a response within 6-12 months.

Pride Films and Plays is delighted to announce that submissions for the 2017 LezPlay Contest are now open.

The mission of LezPlay is to enhance the visibility and advance the viability of lesbian-centered stories for the stage. To that end, LezPlay honors excellence in storytelling by women-identified writers who present lesbian characters and themes—past, present, and future—in a pivotal, positive way.

We want stories that elevate and celebrate us, refine and redefine us. We want to introduce audiences to work that reflects, resonates with, and is relevant to their lives. We want stories that have a broad appeal, stories that will enable us to reach individuals of all ages and in all stages of life.

From April 1 to May 31, 2017, we welcome submissions of full-length plays (up to 120 pages) from writers who identify as women. Only scripts that have not been professionally produced are eligible.

Scripts will be judged by a panel of theatre professionals: directors, artistic directors, playwrights, producers, dramaturges, literary managers.

One winner and two finalists will be selected from all script entries. The selected scripts will be those that receive the highest recommendation from our reading panel and that best align with the mission of LezPlay. The two finalists will receive a prize of $300. The winner will earn a prize of $400 and four days of developmental workshops, culminating in two public staged readings on September 8 and 9 at Pride Arts Center in Chicago.

Here are some answers to your questions:

What are you looking for?

One acts, preferably between 20 - 30 minutes. That being said, we’ll consider 10-20 minutes. We ask that your play NOT to exceed 40 minutes.

Your play must include, but preferably FEATURE, a fridge. We provide the fridge. It is very likely that our fridge will be backless (and therefore walk-through-able) In terms of genre, there are no restrictions whatsoever. Our mission statement is to “pick a snowflake out of an avalanche”, and we want you to be that snowflake. We really like risk-taking and disclaimer-free art, so we encourage you to think outside the (ice)box.

What if I’m selected?

If selected, there is a non-refundable $200 participation fee. This fee includes: 4 performances, marketing, press, production stills for your show, help with graphics. And a potential encore.
You’ll be in charge of fully staging your play, though we’re happy to help with any casting, recommending theater-makers and personal issues (within reason.)

The Boston Project is a new works initiative supporting the creation and development of plays set right here in our hometown. Our goal is to create more plays that explore what it means to be in this city at this moment, and tap into the full breadth of experiences and identities that make up life in Boston. We are seeking proposals for currently unwritten full-length scripts set in contemporary Boston.

The Process
Proposals for unwritten full-length plays meeting the requirements below will be accepted through May 15th, 2017.
From the submitted proposals, SpeakEasy will select two projects, and invite the playwrights to spend the 2017-2018 season writing and developing their plays with us.
Once proposals are selected, SpeakEasy will work with the playwrights to build a development schedule that fits their needs. Potential available resources include: regular dramaturgical meetings, research assistance, deadlines, casual table reads, and feedback sessions with the artistic staff. After the first draft deadline, each playwright will also be paired with a dedicated, professional dramaturg and director to assist with their process.

The development process will culminate in a two-week workshop and invited staged reading in May/June 2018, featuring professional actors from the area.
Each selected playwright will be paid a commissioning fee of $2,500.
SpeakEasy will hold an exclusive production option on the proposed play during its development process, and for a period of ninety days following the 2018 workshop.
How to Apply

To be considered for the Boston Project, please submit by 8pm EST on May 15th, 2017:
A 1-2 page proposal for an unwritten full length play (90+ minutes). The play must be set in Boston or its surrounding areas, and take place within ten years, plus or minus, of the present day.
5-10 exploratory pages for the proposed play. These pages need not be a single, polished scene, but should give a clear sense of how the play will ultimately live on stage.
A professional biography or writing resume detailing your playwriting experience.
A separate full length (90+ minutes) play by you.

All materials should be submitted in .pdf format to bostonproject@speakeasystage.com. The components may be in separate documents, but please include all materials in a single e-mail.

Important Information

This project is designed to support the development of a brand new play. This is not the time to submit a script which you’ve already written; we want to work with you as you explore a fresh idea in its earliest stages.

The proposed play need not center on or be inspired by any real event/person. The only requirement is that it be set in contemporary Boston or its surrounding areas.

For this project’s purposes, “contemporary” means plus or minus ten years from today.

Your 1-2 page proposal should explain the play you intend to create, and may include: a synopsis of the work as best you know it, a potential cast list and/or character breakdown, a statement regarding the inspiration for the work, and any other information about the play you envision. You may also let us know any specific needs you foresee during the development process. The ultimate goal of the proposal is to show us what your play will be beyond its initial premise/inciting incident/idea.

There is no hard limit on cast size, but typically the plays that SpeakEasy produces use between four and eight actors.

While we love musicals here at SpeakEasy, we will not be considering proposals for new musicals as part of this season’s Boston Project.

You do not need to live in the Boston/New England area to submit a proposal, but SpeakEasy is unable to provide housing or travel reimbursement during the development and workshop process.
Part of SpeakEasy’s mission is to reflect the vibrance and diversity of our city. Projects which further that goal will be of particular interest in the selections process.

Proposals that most caught our eye during the first season’s consideration were those in which Boston was an essential component, and not just a generic backdrop. We hope writers will use this opportunity to explore a story that could only take place in this city, and that transcends “typical” Bostonian tropes.

BOSTON FURNACE FRINGE

FURNACE FRINGE IS A CELEBRATION of new and innovative theatrical works, dance performances, musical acts, and visual arts. Our intent is to give young artists the chance to showcase their work in a more professional environment and offer workshops to teach basic skills in the areas of design, dance, visual art, playwriting, and acting. We also have a mentorship program set up for students to be a part of so that they may work with someone in their desired area of the arts. Our two main goals are to foster a community of artists who can collaborate in the future through the connections created in the making of and at the festival AND create a scholarship fund for students looking to further their education in the arts. All proceeds from the festival are going into a scholarship we are creating that will be awarded this fall to an undergraduate student.

Submission period for the one-act plays ends May 17th and we will announce our decisions the first week of June. Submissions for dance pieces are open until mid June. Submissions for small acts for the gallery performances close mid June.

Dance notes: Please submit a video of your piece along with a description of any additional needs for the piece it self. There is no limit to the cast size but please note, you will need to provide the dancers and costumes. We can have some flexibility in helping find any costume pieces you may need and can certainly help with props.

The Earth Matters on Stage (EMOS) Ecodrama Playwrights Festival was founded in 2004 by Theresa May and Larry Fried in order to call forth and foster new dramatic works that respond to the ecological crisis, and, as part of that response, to explore new possibilities of being in relationship with the more-than-human world. EMOS calls for new plays that not only focus on current and historic environmental issues, but also looks for plays that enliven and transform our experience of the world around us, that inspire us to listen better, and instill a deeper or more complex sense of our ecological communities.[1] If your play does any of these things, send it to us!

The EMOS Festival includes workshop performance(s) of the winning script(s), readings, talkbacks and discussions of the scripts that are finalists in the Ecodrama Playwrights’ Contest. The concurrent symposium will include speakers, panels, practice-based workshops, and discussions that advance scholarship in the area of arts, ecology and climate change, and help foster development of new works.

Guidelines for Playwrights:

Scripts must be original works which have not been published and have not had an Equity or full professional premiere production. (Readings or informal workshop productions are okay.)

In general, we are looking for plays that do one or more of the following:
- Engage the personal, local, regional and/or global implications of man-made climate change. - Put an ecological issue or environmental event/crisis at the center of the dramatic action or theme of the play.
- Expose and illuminate issues of environmental justice.
- Explore the relationship between sustainability, community and cultural diversity.
- Interpret community to include our ecological community, and/or give voice or character to the land, or elements of the land.
- Theatrically explore the connection between people and place, human and non-human, and/or between culture and nature.
- Grow out of the playwright’s personal relationship to the land and the ecology of a specific place.
- Theatrically examine the reciprocal relationship between human, animal and plant communities.
- Celebrate the joy of the ecological world in which humans participate.
- Offer an imagined world view that illuminates our ecological condition or reflects on the ecological crisis from a unique cultural or philosophical perspective.
- Critique or satirize patterns of exploitation, consumption, or other ingrained values that are ecologically unsustainable.
- Are written specifically to be performed in an unorthodox venue such as a natural or environmental setting, and for which that setting is a not merely a backdrop, but an integral part of the intention of the play.

In addition, for this Alaska EMOS Festival, we especially encourage submissions which also:
- Engage with cultural impacts of man-made climate change.
- Are written from an Alaska Native perspective.
- Explore or depict the circumpolar North, the Arctic, or the Antarctic.
- Are set in or are about Alaska.
- Are written by Alaskans AND which engage with the general themes (above).

Submission Process:

We are looking for full-length plays that are written primarily (though not necessarily exclusively) in English. Submitted plays should address the thematic guidelines as listed above. Deadline: May 1, 2017. Early submission is highly encouraged.

- ten-minute plays
- one-act plays (unless they are longer than 30 minutes in length)
- musicals (though we love them, we cannot financially accommodate their production for this festival)

The Ypsi THRIVE New Short Play Festival

Pencilpoint Theatreworks is seeking submissions for the first annual Ypsi THRIVE New Short Play Festival. THRIVE will be held Sept. 24 – Oct. 1, 2017, at Riverside Arts Center in downtown Ypsilanti, Mich. Six to eight short plays will be selected for black box productions.

We are looking for short plays that, to quote Maya Angelou, have “some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” The purpose of THRIVE is to bring people together in the theater to discover a new understanding of ourselves and to explore and celebrate the human experience.

A stipend will be paid to all playwrights whose work is selected for production.

Submission Guidelines:

• There is no entry fee.
• Plays should not exceed 15 minutes in length and technical requirements should be minimal.
• Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces featuring underrepresented characters are encouraged.
• Only one play per playwright.
• All entries should be unpublished and previously unproduced in Michigan.
• All genres are accepted except for monologues, musicals, children’s plays or one-actor plays.
• Standard play format with numbered pages.
• Include contact information on title page of the script only. Playwright’s name should not appear on any other script pages.

Off With Her Head Productions is accepting submissions of new plays for our workshop program, The Uncorseted Series. After our inaugural night of new work was a success, we are excited to branch out and meet new writers to collaborate with.

About Uncarpeted:

This series was founded to accomplish a trifecta of goals - workshop and present the plays of young writers, support local Brooklyn businesses, and raise money/awareness for feminist political and volunteer organizations. For our first series, we presented two one act plays, dealing with themes of women's sexual agency, and donated money for Marie Stopes, an organization that supports female reproductive health in countries around the world. Our partnering Brooklyn business is Cafe Forte, a wonderful gem of a cafe in Crown Heights that serves delicious food, coffee, and adult beverages. We had an excellent turnout in March, and were able to unite and introduce some of our favorite artists to one another, so we are excited to keep the series going.

How and what to submit:

If you're interested in workshopping a new play through our series, please submit a short bio about your work and a 10 page sample from the play to the email address listed. Writers of all genders, races, and backgrounds are encouraged to submit. All we request is that you are excited about the goals of the series, and that your play adheres to the mission statement of our company, listed below.

Inspired by the tragic ends of women like Anne Boleyn and Marie Antoinette, Off With Her Head is named for these women, who were powerful, beautiful, sexual beings eventually beheaded for being anomalies in their communities. The mission of this company is to take stories about women and re-imagine them, whether that be by placing classic stories in a modern setting, or taking stereotypes of women that have pervaded until today, and turning them on their heads. We are also interested in exploring the ways that women have and can break out of social constructs that have been imposed on them. We strive to take stories about women, open them up, and make them new again.

Arch and Bruce Brown 2017 Playwriting Competition

The 2017 playwriting competition will be open to submissions from March 1 through April 30, 2017. All manuscripts must be electronically submitted (no hard copies) and received by midnight on April 30. Only the first 150 submissions will be accepted, and we will not consider work previously submitted to this competition.

Only full-length works (dramas, comedies, musicals, screenplays) will be considered.

One entry per author, please. Scripts must be original and in English. All must concern lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or genderqueer life and be based on, or directly inspired by, a historical person, culture, work of art, or event.

There is no entry fee. Prizes are as follows: First Prize, $3,000; Second Prize, $1,500; Honorable Mentions, $500. Prizewinners will be announced before the end of the year.

To be eligible for the Foundation’s 2017 competition:

Your script must involve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or genderqueer characters and/or themes.

You must submit a brief statement, no longer than one page, describing how the script fulfills the above requirements. This statement should explain the time period and historical issues involved.

Although submissions on any theme are welcome, this year we are particularly interested in works concerning pornography, sex workers, military service, aging, and education of LGBTQ youth. Also, we especially welcome works by and about women and people of color.
If your work has been produced in any form (workshop, staged reading, or full production), your submission must also include a synopsis of the work’s production history. We will give precedence to works that have never received a full production.

If all of these conditions of eligibility are not met, your submission will not be read.

When submitting:

Manuscripts should be in standard play or screenplay format, using a 12-point or larger font, and saved as a .doc, .docx, or PDF.

The cover page must include the title and your name, as well as your own email address, mailing address, and phone number. Even if you are represented by an agent, please provide your personal contact information.

In the case of musicals, audio segments should be sent separately as MP3 files and limited to a total of 10 minutes. We will request more if necessary.

Talk Back Theatre seeks plays for readings in California

TBT is dedicated to producing staged readings of new work. For our purposes, "new work" means that the play has never been fully produced. Previous readings and workshops do not render the piece ineligible. We are creating a forum for conversation, and as such we are seeking plays that raise questions about pertinent social, political, and/or environmental issues of our time.

Our inaugural call for submissions is OPEN NOW THROUGH MAY 1

Once submissions close on May 1, TBT will commence our play selection process. We will announce the chosen play in early June. The reading will take place in Orange County, California in late September 2017. While we encourage playwrights to attend rehearsals and readings, we understand that it may be impractical in some cases and do not require it. We do not discourage non-local playwrights from submitting.

In addition to a desire to foster conversation within our diverse community, TBT also seeks to support new voices in American theatre and local artists. As such, the playwright of the selected work will receive a writer's fee of $700.00 and will not be responsible for the payment of actors and directors nor the rental of spaces. Please note that TBT cannot provide any additional funds for travel or lodging.

Renegade Theatre Festival

The Renegade Theatre Festival, held in Lansing, Michigan, is seeking new plays for our annual festival held in August. Going into its 12th year in the festival-rich Old Town district, Renegade is a free, completely volunteer festival that gives theaters and independent producer/writer/directors an opportunity to present works that they might not normally stage. This summer marks the eighth year of the festival featuring new, original works – Renegade N.O.W.!

We will be accepting plays in two separate categories. We will be accepting new, original works that meet the following guidelines:

New Plays #1:
Plays should be no longer than 90 minutes in length. (45 pages)
Have never been produced.
Can be any style/genre.

New Plays #2:
Plays written on the theme: Alternative Facts: Rogue Reality
Are not longer than 10 minutes in length.
Have a cast of no more than three characters.
Have never been produced.
Can be any style/genre.
Can be fully produced using minimal setting/props/costumes.

The deadline for new play submissions is May 15th, 2017.

Selected plays will be seen by as many as 2,000 festival goers as well as professional, community and educational theatre representatives. Highlights from previous festivals have included performances of comedy, drama, musicals, children’s theatre, performance art, readings of new works by local playwrights, spoken word and improvisation. Past participants have included Williamston Theatre, Peppermint Creek Theatre Company, Ruhala Performing Arts Center, Starlight Dinner Theatre, Lansing Community College Theatre, All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre, Mid-Michigan Family Theatre, Saginaw Valley State University, Holt-Dimondale Community Players, Shakespeare on the Grand, Riverwalk Theatre and Michigan State University.

We are currently accepting submissions for the LIC One Act Festival 2017, a competition style festival. The Secret Theatre is seeking to promote emerging playwrights and new works for their annual one act festival. Please review the guidelines below before submitting. There are no fees to participate or apply.

All finalist have an option to be included in a non-exclusive play anthology for the festival. Audience votes will decide who makes it into the finals. All plays included in the final will have a chance to win cash prizes. Categories include:

$100: Best Play
$50: Best Director
$50: Best Actor
$50: Best Actress

Guidelines:
  • Plays must be between 10-20 minutes in length
  • This is a self-produced festival. The playwright is the producer. As such, you will be responsible for hiring a director and actors. (The Secret Theatre will not do this on your behave) However, a lighting designer and stage manager will be provided for the run of the festival.
  • Props and set must be minimal. The Secret Theatre does not have storage space for large set pieces, props, etc. There are rehearsal cubes, folding tables and single chairs available and suggest that you keep everything minimal. The Secret Theatre will not be responsible for storage of any costumes.
  • If selected, your play will perform at least 3-4 performances over the entire festival run. The number of performances, and program groups, is dependent on the amount of plays accepted and able to participate.

Submissions are now being accepted for one act plays by young writers for Capital Repertory Theatre’s (theREP) New Voices event in the 2017 Next Act! New Play Summit 6.

Next Act! now in its sixth year, is an expansion of theREP’s commitment to the development of new work and directly reflects the theatre’s mission, “to create meaningful theatre generated from an authentic link to the community.”

New Voices, which received a pilot run in 2014 summit, reflects the theatre’s dedication to providing theatrical opportunities to students from Elementary School through College. This particular Next Act event is dedicated to new works from the next generation of playwrights, and will include 3-5 readings of one act plays by student playwrights. Next Act! New Play Summit 6 takes place October 20 – 23, 2017.

Accepting 15-Minute one act plays by students ages 13-22. - (must be enrolled in school at the time of submission)


Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces encouraged.

ELIGIBILITY
Eligible plays must be 15-minutes in length and should have no more than 7 characters.
Plays previously submitted to Next Act will not be considered for this years’ Summit.
Playwrights must be enrolled in school at the time of submission.

Playwrights should submit one document, as a Microsoft word or PDF file attachment. This document must include: a short one-paragraph synopsis – that illuminates the plays entire plot including its ending; character descriptions and the complete script. Playwrights should include the name of the school they are currently attending – and what year – in the body of the email.

We’re looking for short plays for our upcoming summer 2017 production. This year’s theme is ‘Silence is the loudest sound’. Plays should be between 10 -20 minutes with a cast size of 4 or less. Plays must include and mention a sycamore tree pendant.

Seeking Summer Shorts 10-Minute Scripts

We are seeking 8 original ten-minute plays for our Summer Shorts production, which will be presented at the Orlando Shakespeare Center's Santos Dantin Studio Theater.

Please check out the guidelines before submitting. We look forward to seeing your plays!

  1. Submissions will be accepted April 1st through May 1st. Please submit no more than 2 plays per writer. There is no charge to submit a play. Writers WILL receive a small stipend of $25 for being selected, and if possible will be provided video copies and photography of the event for their records.
  2. Plays should be 10 pages long, or approximately 10 minutes. Plays must be original, previously unproduced works. Plays that have been previously workshopped, presented as a staged reading, or have not been locally (Orlando) produced are acceptable.
  3. Scripts should be properly formatted and submitted electronically in .DOC (MS Word 2003), DOCX (Word 2007 and later) or PDF format. Please number the pages. Other file types are acceptable, but we may ask you to convert them to a new file type if we can't open them.
  4. Please send TWO copies of your script - one with full authorship information, and one "blind" copy, which omits the name (this is the copy our readers will see). Please include the following information on the title page of your main submission: name, e-mail address, contact phone number, city/country of residence, and a brief synopsis of the play. You may also include a resume or CV, in a separate attachment from the play submission. 
  5. The selected plays will be performed in a small 60-seat black box, so please keep your set requirements very simple. Remember that 8 plays will be presented in one evening, so plays that have minimal tech and set requirements are preferred. 
  6. Plays should be emailed to submissions@theprt.com. The deadline for consideration for the script call is 12:00 AM on May 1st. If you experience difficulty e-mailing scripts or attachments to this address, as a backup, please send them to info@theprt.com or charlesrdent@hotmail.com. 
  7. Selected playwrights will be notified via email, and granted the option of being produced. Who can submit?

Both established and emerging writers. The York Theatre Company is one of the only theatres in the country that accepts unsolicited scripts.

What materials should I submit?

1. A cover letter introducing yourself and the piece, complete with name, address, phone number and email address.
2. A complete script of the piece
3. A demo of the score (as complete as possible)

How long does the evaluation process take?
The process generally takes six to twelve months: our script readers are dedicated but busy, and we're always working through a backlog.

Will my materials be returned?
While each submission will get a reply, we are unable to return your materials.


What shouldn't I submit?
. Non-musical plays: the York's mission concerns musicals only
. Jukebox musicals: the York is generally not interested in musicals without original scores, except under special circumstances
