2019-20 Woodward/Newman Drama Award

BPP is now accepting submissions for the 2019-20 Woodward/Newman Drama Award.

Submissions must be postmarked by March 1, 2019. 

The winner will be announced in May/June 2019.

"Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).
Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.
Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.


Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. The BPP only accepts U.S. checks or money orders (Make check payable to "BPP"). No international checks or money orders will be accepted.


It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.

We do not accept e-mail submissions. Scripts will not be returned. Blind submissions are not necessary. Please include all contact information. Plays submitted in previous years will be accepted.

The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production.

Fifth Annual End of the Road New Short Play Festival and Beach Party

South Baldwin Community Theatre of Golf Shores, Alabama is seeking submissions for the Fifth Annual End of the Road New Short Play Festival and Beach Party to be held July 12, 13 & 14 2019 in Gulf Shores AL. It will consist of three staged readings of eight winning ten-minute plays. There will be an additional slot reserved for a student (18 and under) play.

By submitting your play you are agreeing to participate in the production of the play which means that attendance by the playwright is a requirement for winning scripts.

Plays may have had prior productions but may not have been published. Plays should not exceed 10 minutes in length and should be appropriate for a family-friendly theatre.

Laughing Pig Theatre is seeking monologues

Laughing Pig Theatre is seeking WRITERS and STORYTELLERS to write a personal monologue or story about feelings of “embarrassment.” We are seeking diverse storytellers willing to submit personal pieces that illustrate the full range of emotions part and parcel to the experience: humor, tragedy, everything in between. The only guideline is that it must be your original work. Length and exact theme is up to the writer as long as it is inspired by “embarrassment.”

The submission deadline is February 2nd at 11:59pm. 

Our team will select the final pieces that represent the theme. Selected monologues will be performed in our Monologue Cafe on March 22th, 23rd, 29th, & 30th. This event will be public, and video and audio recording is okay. As part of your submission, you give Laughing Pig Theatre the rights to utilize audio, video, and still images from the Monologue Cafe for professional purposes. You will retain all rights to your work. For future reproductions by Laughing Pig Theatre we will request your permission.

Should we select your piece, you will get a digital copy of the performance and a performance as a thank you. You are also welcome to perform your own piece but because of the sensitive nature of what we are asking, we do not require that you read your own work. We will have performers standing by to bring your words to life. If you choose to perform your monologue, you must be available and memorized on March 18th- 21st (7:30pm-10pm) for dress rehearsals and performances March 22nd, 23rd, 29th, & 30th (6:30pm-10pm).

Renegade NOW 2019 Now Accepting Submissions

The Renegade Theatre Festival, held in Lansing, Michigan, is seeking new plays for our annual festival held in August. Going into its 14th year in the festival-rich Old Town district, Renegade is a free, completely volunteer festival that gives theaters and independent producer/writer/directors an opportunity to present works that they might not normally stage. This summer marks the tenth year of the festival featuring new, original works – Renegade N.O.W.!

Selected plays will be seen by as many as 2,000 festival goers as well as professional, community and educational theatre representatives. In previous years, the festival has included a variety of performances by local and mid-Michigan theatres and artists. This year, we are focusing all of our energies on new plays! We hope to foster and build this festival in celebration of playwrights and new work. We’re very excited for this next stage in growing our festival.

Renegade is now accepting plays in two separate categories. We will be accepting new, original works that meet the following guidelines:

New Plays #1:
  • Plays should be no longer than 60 minutes in length. (1 page = 1 minute)
  • May have been produced as a staged reading or in workshop, but not as a fully produced production.
  • Can be any style/genre.

New Plays #2:
  • Plays written on the theme: Breaking Down Barriers
  • Are not longer than 10 minutes in length.
  • Have a cast of no more than three characters.
  • May have been produced as a staged reading or in workshop, but not as a fully produced production.
  • Can be any style/genre.
  • Can be fully produced using minimal setting/props/costumes.
The deadline for new play submissions is February 1, 2019.  We will only be accepting 250 plays this year. Once that number of submissions has been reached, a notice will be posted on this website.

Next Act! seeks full-length plays

Next Act!, now in its eighth year, is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s (theREP) commitment to the development of new work. At the same time, the weekend-long summit is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s rich diverse populations. Next Act! New Play Summit 8 will take place June 7-10, 2019 and will feature readings of four never-before produced plays, with additional special events throughout the weekend.

theREP is looking for scripts that use theatre to address injustices, inequities, and cultural collisions, providing a voice for the unheard on stage, in the workplace, the Capital Region and beyond. Scripts that engage art and social justice.
  • Accepting full length plays only.
  • (No Musicals.)
  • Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces encouraged.
  • Comedy and Drama welcome!

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible plays cannot have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 7 characters. (Please do not submit works in which actors play multiple roles, unless it is a device used to illuminate generations.)

Plays previously submitted to Next Act will not be considered.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Playwrights should submit all materials in one document, either a Microsoft Word document or a PDF file, via email attachment. This document must include: a short one-paragraph synopsis – that illuminates the plays entire plot including its ending; the character descriptions and the first 10 pages (and only the first ten pages) of their play. Submission documents must be void of playwright’s name and contact information.

Submissions that do not conform to the guidelines stipulated will not be accepted.

Teatru Manoel Education Programme seeks one-act plays

Happy New Year one and all. We are looking for four new short plays to perform for the first time here in Malta.

Are you a writer with a play you want to see realised?

Want your work performed on an international platform?

Toi Toi, Teatru Manoel’s Education Programme are looking for four new, previously unperformed one act plays which will come together under the umbrella title Breaking the Rules

Submissions are open and playwrights are invited to interpret the umbrella title in any way they wish as Toi Toi develop a brand new platform created to showcase emerging and established theatrical talent both at home and abroad.

See your work staged by passionate up and coming professional theatre-makers, all of whom have worked with the Teatru Manoel Main Stage Crew, mounting theatre productions in one of Europe’s oldest working theatres.

CRITERIA

Pieces can be of any genre: comedy, drama, contemporary, period, but must take the form of a theatrical script with dialogue.

Across the four pieces we are looking at casting around twenty young performers
Characters within the piece can be of any gender but must be aged 15 – 30 years

Pieces must be complete as we will not be offering a writers-workshop or re-write period.

Pieces must be between 20 - 25 minutes long.

Keep things technically minimal but feel free to set the piece in any period.

Deadline for submissions: Friday 01 February 2019

The successful submissions will be staged in June 2019 in the Teatru Manoel Studio Theatre.

Royal Court submission guidelines

The Literary Office is dedicated to finding exciting new plays that ask bold questions about the way we live now. We receive over 3000 unsolicited scripts a year from emerging and established playwrights, all of which are assessed and considered for development or production at the Royal Court.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
If you are a writer and would like to send us a script for consideration, then the Literary Office is your first port of call. The Royal Court programmes original plays that investigate the problems and possibilities of our time. Occasionally, we also present revivals. We are looking for outstanding plays which are formally or thematically original and are unlikely to be produced elsewhere.

Before you submit a script to us, we suggest you familiarise yourself with the Royal Court; come and see the plays being produced in our Upstairs and Downstairs spaces, and look at the archive and reviews of recent productions. This should give you a better feel for what we are looking for.

We do not accept one act plays or multiple submissions.

Please do not send us screenplays, novels, collections of poems or radio plays as the Royal Court does not programme adaptations from other forms. We will not read historical or biographical plays and we are unlikely to programme new musicals unless these have been commissioned by us. Unfortunately, we cannot consider resubmissions or new drafts of plays we have read and responded to, unless we have specifically requested a new draft.

SUBMITTING YOUR SCRIPT
Please send scripts in hard copy (double-sided if possible with contact details on the first page only), with a brief synopsis and covering letter describing any previous playwriting experience, to: The Literary Office, Royal Court, Sloane Square, London SW1W 8AS. Unfortunately, we cannot accept scripts by email.

Scripts sent without return postage will be recycled. We are unable to return scripts sent internationally so please do not send International Postage Coupons. Please use recyclable envelopes when submitting scripts to us.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
All English language scripts submitted to the theatre are booked in and distributed to readers, as appropriate, from the Literary Office. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your script, generally by email. This can take up to three weeks depending on the current quantity of submissions. The scripts are then read by a team of professional playwrights and directors, the senior in-house readers and/or the Literary Manager.

The reader’s report forms the basis of a recommendation to the Literary Manager and, where appropriate, may lead to consideration of the script by the senior Artistic Team at our weekly script meeting and/or additional support for play development through workshops, attachments or readings.

We read all scripts sent to us and will contact you to let you know whether or not we wish to proceed with the development of your play. We receive a large number of scripts through this submissions process; we aim to let you know the outcome of our reading within three to four months of acknowledging receipt but it can take us longer than this to fully consider plays.

Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to provide critical feedback or enter into correspondence with playwrights whose work is felt to be unsuitable for further development or production at the Royal Court. However, where appropriate, we strive to secure the interest of other theatres and producers in plays we consider to be of particular merit, but which are not suitable for our own programme.

Fishamble offers dramaturgical support and advice to new and developing playwrights. We welcome manuscript submissions of new, original dramatic work and appreciate the time, effort and the act of creation that goes into writing a play.
Guidelines for submitting a play


  • Fishamble does not accept scripts by email. Please send script submissions in hard copy only
  • Fishamble is a new play company, therefore we will only consider plays that have not previously been produced
  • Scripts should be bound – stapled/clipped – and all pages must be numbered
  • Please include contact details on title page
  • Fishamble does not offer a full play response service but if requested, will provide a brief set of comments on the work
  • Fishamble encourages the submission of work which is of particular interest to Irish audiences
  • Writers should limit themselves to sending Fishamble no more than one script in the calendar year
  • Scripts will not be returned unless a SAE is enclosed

SOUND BITES 6.0 seeks 10-minute musicals

  • Theatre Now New York (TNNY) will ONLY be accepting online submissions.
  • The submissions will be accepted beginning  SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 until FEBRUARY 1, 2019 at Midnight -- Any request for an extension must be received before the February deadline at soundbites@tnny.org and approval is not guaranteed.
  • There are NO FEES to submit and NO participation FEES if your show is accepted.
  • Please feel free to contact us at soundbites@tnny.org with any questions.
  • There is no limit to the number of musicals that an individual may submit, but each musical must be submitted separately.
  • Scripts must be submitted in Word or PDF format and must have a cover page with the project name, names of all members of the creative team and contact information of one primary contact person. Music file(s) of song(s) should be uploaded at the time of submission. Please also upload bios of all creative team members and a production history of the piece submitted, if any.  Finally, a letter from a theatre professional recommending your work must also accompany your submission.
  • Ten finalists will be chosen to present their musicals.
  • Each entry must be no more than 10 minutes.  It can be either a stand-alone musical or an excerpt from a larger full-scale musical or another performance piece that includes music.  If it is an excerpt, the excerpt is strongly encouraged to have a beginning, middle, and end and able to stand on its own.
  • The top ten finalists will need to be hands-on responsible for producing their own musical with the TNNY staff regardless of whether they live in NYC or not. 
  • Each musical finalist will be responsible for direction and casting of their own piece.  TNNY will help in casting and securing a director, if needed.
  • TNNY will work with you on your production helping you throughout the process. TNNY will provide up to 20 hours of rehearsal time 2 weeks prior to SOUND BITES.  Any additional or prior rehearsals needed will be your responsibility.  TNNY will provide the venue and will run the final rehearsal run-thru of all the pieces and the tech rehearsal on the day of the performance.  TNNY will also provide assorted stage cubes, stage chairs and electric keyboard. Your team, your director, and cast will be responsible for costuming & providing props and any simple scenic elements needed for your show. Your team is responsible for any and all expenses not provided by TNNY as listed here.
  • All actors, dancers, and singers must be off-book.
  • TNNY handles publicity, promotion and ticket sales.
  • Performance dates will be in the SPRING of 2019.  Based on venue availability we expect the performance date to be a Monday evening in late May 2019, subject to change.

The Bridge Award

AITAF is thrilled to announce that Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Tony Kushner will be the Final Selecting Judge for the 2019 Bridge Award!

Submissions opened on December 1st 2018 and will close on February 1st 2019.

The Bridge Award was established in honor of our tenth anniversary with the purpose of recognizing an emerging playwright of exceptional talent within the United States military. The award consists of a $10,000 prize, and an AITAF produced reading of the winning work.

In addition to bringing world-class theater to the military, AITAF is committed to supporting and sharing the talents of those who serve. This Award will offer a deserving current military service member or veteran artist important connections with the theater community and access to developmental resources, helping to facilitate a deeper understanding and more active dialogue between military and civilian communities.

Eligibility/Guidelines:

  • Author must currently serve or have served in the United States military. All selected finalists will be required to provide proof of service.
  • All submissions must be full-length, completed plays.
  • Musicals, screenplays, or one-act plays are ineligible.
  • All submissions must be unpublished.
  • The submitted play may not have received a professional, reviewed production.
  • The submitted play may address any subject matter or theme; military settings or content are not given any extra consideration.
  • Each author may submit one play per year; multiple submissions are not allowed.
  • Once a play has been submitted, no further revisions or new drafts may be entered.
  • Plays with a producer, producing organization or theater attached are not eligible.

Global Female Voices and Global Female Arab Voices

Global Female Voices and Global Female Arab Voices will premiere excerpts of new plays in translation and from the wider English-speaking world.

We are welcoming submissions from all female-identifying playwrights that are based (or previously resided) outside of the UK, or who are part of the international community. We are particularly interested in reading submissions from playwrights from Arab countries and the Arab diaspora.

The performances of rehearsed readings will be taking place on the following dates:
- Global Female Voices, Arcola Theatre: Saturday 23rd February 2019
- Global Female Arab Voices, Rich Mix: Saturday 9th March 2019 (part of the Arab Women Artists Now festival)

We are looking for plays from contexts beyond the Western world; exploring issues and settings that audiences might not otherwise see in London theatres.

Playwrights should be based outside of the UK.

Plays can be any length, from any period, and with any number of characters; and must be in, or translated into, English.

If you are submitting a play that has been translated and if the play or translation is still under copyright, you must ensure that both the playwright and the translator (or the relevant rights-holders) give their authorisation for the translation to be submitted and to participate.

Follows is an overview of how the competition will be run and what will be expected from each creative team participating.

There will be 5 performance series with 6 plays in each series so we are only accepting 30 plays.

Each performance series will consist of 6 play productions in each series. The 1 play from each performance series that scores the highest will go on to the Finals on Thursday March 21 , Friday March 22 and Saturday March 23 at 6:30 pm  So there will be six plays in the Finals. The one play production that scores the highest for the three Finals performances will win the $500 prize which is awarded that night.

The voting here is done by audience ballot where each play production in a performance series is rated from 6 to 1 in order of preference with no duplicates - 6 being the best. The voting is crowd-sourced in a way that prevents the play with the most friends from ALWAYS winning. We like that. It still helps to invite friends but bringing the most friends does not guarantee entrance into the finals. A great play production will!!

Another one of the things that we do that we feel is very important is that we organize and run the tech for the show so that in each performance series of 6 plays everything flows smoothly creating a professional show. We supply a technician and we run all the tech. All the scene changes between shows are orchestrated so that they are 60 seconds or less, so that the audience does not have to go crazy waiting as actors set the set for 10 minutes or more, like in other competitions in town. We create a slick professional show so that all the shows in each performance series can showcase their work in a professional context.

Lastly, we orchestrate the performance times at this competition so that there is MEET and GREET time after your performance, so you are not RUN right out of the theatre which occurs all the time at festivals throughout New York and, yes, this is super important to us too... we keep our theatre, our dressing room and bathroom super CLEAN for audience and actors alike. It is part of our mission to keep our space clean for the artists who are working here. (Some theatres in NYC are downright scary for they have never been dusted in years!)

Play Submission Guidelines:

Submission Deadline: January 21, 2019

Notification of Selected Plays: June, 2019 (earlier if possible)

Entry Fee: None
  • Plays must not have been previously produced or published.
  • Plays shall be full complete works, not a scene or act from a lager work or work-in-progress.
  • The playwright’s name should not appear anywhere in the script.
  • Include two title pages: One title page should contain a) the name of your play, and b) your name, address, phone number, and email address. The second title page should include only the title of your play, as this will be a blind read. The document should contain no identifying information about the author on any page except the one title page, which will not be revealed until the plays are selected.
  • Plays should run no more than 40 minutes in length.
  • Plays must be typed in standard play format.
  • Please include play’s development history as a separate document. e.g. had a staged reading at Chicago Dramatist. If none, not necessary.
  • Please include a synopsis of your play in 50-100 words.
  • Production criteria include scripts able to be produced with open staging and minimal design/technical support for a 117-seat black box theater.
  • Play must be able to be performed with no more than six actors (double casting is okay). Note that younger actors may be difficult to cast.
  • Manuscripts will not be returned. Please do not send return envelopes with postage.
  • Playwrights retain full rights to all works submitted. However, TWS shall be named as “first

  • Selected plays will have a production mounted in August 2019 at The Theatre of Western Springs with at least three performances.

Vines Art Festival takes place on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples in Vancouver Canada.

Vines is inviting artists of all disciplines interested in creating outdoor site-specific works at Trout Lake and other local parks to apply. NYCPlaywrights Podcast seeks 10-minute romantic comedies

The theme for the next NYCPlaywrights Podcast is "romantic comedy."
  • The play must be romantic in the sense of romantic love - not only sex.
  • The play doesn't have to be uproariously funny to be a romantic comedy but must have a happy ending - or at least not a downbeat or cynical ending.
  • Romantic comedies involving couples who are not heterosexual are welcome.
  • The Podcast pays actors for their performances - having many characters will count against your play due to the expense. And 10-minute plays usually work best with fewer characters.
These are the submission rules:
  • The deadline is Sunday, January 27, 2018 at 11:59 PM EST.
  • There is no fee for submission 
  • The script must be a romantic comedy.
  • The play can be no longer than ten pages (not counting title, list of characters etc.)
  • Only one submission per playwright.
  • The submission should be sent by email, with the script itself as a file attached to the email as a PDF file.

Heartland Theatre Company is seeking eight short original plays to be considered for production in June of 2019 as part of our 18th annual 10-minute play festival. This year, the theme is THE LIBRARY.

The competition is open to all playwrights who wish to submit a play. Eight plays will be selected and performed from among all the submissions

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE RULES:

1. Your play must fit the theme – THE LIBRARY– or it will not be considered.
2. Your play must fit our theater and its performance space.
3. We require internet submissions in MS Word or PDF.
4. When formatting your play, we ask that you follow our style sheet.
5. We are looking for NEW plays. Please do not send us anything that has previously been produced.
6. Your play must contain at least two (2) characters, but no more than four (4).
7. Heartland Theatre Company has a pool of actors ranging in age from 18 to 80. Make sure that your characters can be played by actors within that range.
8. Your play should consist mainly of dialogue, not monologues.
9. No children’s plays, musicals, or plays which were previously chosen as winners in any Heartland Theatre playwriting competition will be considered.
10. Do not put your name on the play itself, as submissions are judged blind. Make sure your title and page numbers appear on every page of the play, however.
11. If your play cannot be considered for any reason, we will notify you as soon as possible. If, in the judges’ opinion, the problem is easily fixable and the play otherwise has merit, we may ask you for revisions. Asking for revisions is completely up to the judges. If you’d like to see what criteria the judges consider, please read the Judging Sheet (PDF or Word).
12. Those plays which win and are staged will be videotaped for archival purposes.
13. No contracts beyond the guidelines mentioned here will be offered.
14. Only one entry will be accepted from each playwright.
15. Your play must be written in English.
16. Keep your play under ten minutes in length.
17. Remember that something has to happen in those ten minutes.

What Is The Pool?

Founded by The Present Company in 2005 and now working under the aegis of The Brick,
The Pool is a workshop group of writers, actors, and directors that has developed some of indie theater’s most recognizable works.

The Pool is a rigorous (but laid-back) play development group that allows playwrights, directors, and actors to hear new work and receive feedback. We meet every other week for three hours a session through the fall, winter, and spring at various spaces.

Writers are encouraged to claim reading slots in advance and write to the deadline. Slots usually consist of approximately 30 pages of new work, though this can vary widely. Participants are strongly encouraged to invite actors in to read their work, and The Pool will endeavor to keep an informal directory of actors willing to come play with us. Entire scripts may be read on an on-needed basis, and participants are strongly encouraged to arrange these in advance.

The mission of The Pool is to develop new plays, and is structured around the growth of the work itself. As such, most of its active participants are playwrights, however other artists are welcome to bring in new work as well. It is the interests and needs of the work that predominate.

Participants may decline comments, read whatever length piece they need to hear, or bring in ideas to brainstorm... however best the resources of The Pool may be used to meet the needs of the work.

The Pool provides a consistent and safe peer environment for dedicated artists to experiment with their work. A respect for the needs of the play, no matter the stage of development, and a dedication to the voice of the project inform spirited feedback sessions. Flexibility and consistency are the keys to providing the group with inspiration, community, and a sense of purpose.

Admission to The Pool

The Pool works with a steady rotation of 6-8 projects. Playwrights, directors, or actors may submit a project to the Pool. Admission is on a rolling basis.

Artists wanting to submit a project to The Pool should send either a script or a brief treatment, a bio, and a short statement that briefly answers these three questions: how would you describe what you are working on, what are your goals for the project, and why do you think working in a group such as the Pool can help you reach them?

Theatre Suburbia Mellerdramer 2019

Theatre Suburbia, Northwest Houston's longest running all volunteer playhouse, is looking to produce a new Summer Mellerdramer in 2019.

Our theatre has produced crowd pleasing mellerdrammers each summer for many years. We have worked with published scripts like Little Nell the Orphan Girl by Nelson Goodhue, Deadwood Dick by Tom Taggert, Rascality on the Rig by William S Davis, and Curse of an Aching Heart by Herbert E Swayne as well as unpublished works by Eddie Cope, Paul Hager, Dave Brandl and other local writers.

Theatre Suburbia invites the playwriting community to submit new unpublished scripts for consideration. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2019.

GUIDELINES
To qualify for consideration, the scripts should conform to the following guidelines:
• The script must have a running time between 90 and 120 minutes.
• The script should have 2 acts with one intermission.
• The main characters (villain, hero and heroine) should make their stage entrances within the first 10 pages of the script.
• The script should contain from 8 to 12 characters. Characters must be a minimum of 10 years old. Remember: children can be difficult to cast and this may affect final selection.
• The scripts should contain asides (in mellerdrammer fashion) for the characters. The villain should have the most, followed by the hero and heroine, and remaining cast should have a few. The asides help generate the audience responses for the main characters - boos and hisses for the villain, oohs and ahs for the heroine, and of course cheers for the hero.
• This is to be a family type show so absolutely no vulgar, offensive or suggestive language is allowed.
• Set requirements should be simple with a minimum number of locations (house, yard, street scene, etc) because the show is to be performed in the round and the popcorn must be easily cleaned after each performance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Any agreed to production can be subject to Royalty, and will be subject to written contractual agreement between Playwright and Theatre Suburbia.
• Author may, at the theatres discretion, have limited input into the producing of the script. The director and Theatre Suburbia have final authority on the production i.e. casting, set etc.

Now calling all playwrights: Here’s a chance to have your play live on a New York City Stage!  Submit your work to the Summerfest 2019 festival competition. Accepting plays and musicals of all genres between 5-90 minutes in length.  New York Theater Festival has been a haven for playwrights for 15 seasons.

Submissions Accepted from the Tristate Area and Shows from beyond a 30-mile radius outside of Manhattan can only run if the entire cast and crew are from New York City. Plays are considered on a first-come first-served basis. The earlier you submit, the better your chances are of having your script invited to the festival.  Each applicant is fully responsible for all elements of their production, including directing, casting, stage-managing.

99 beautiful red fabric seats and 4 wheel-chair friendly spots. A stage the side of your average 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan (29’x22’) with plenty of backstage space, room in the wings, a large dressing room complete with mirrors, sink, clean and functional bathroom.

What other festival offers you the use of 86 set props/furniture in their storage for free? Not only do we invite you to use our items, we offer free storage.  It’s not fun double parking your truck outside of theaters to find your windshield sporting a new parking ticket. It’s annoying lugging all your props, set items, and costumes back and forth on the subway throughout the length of your run.  Don’t sweat it.  We have space- and that’s not easy to come by in NYC!

Thank you for your interest in submitting your script to East West Players.

Please note that our mission focuses on the Asian Pacific experience, and the majority of the new works we workshop and produce revolve around Asian and Asian American characters and/or themes. We are interested in both plays and musicals. Works need not be “issue-oriented,” in that race/immigrant issues can be an unspoken component in the work.

We are particularly interested in new comedies, musicals, and works that unearth the history of Asians in America.

Writers are strongly encouraged to browse through our production history, which can be found here, to see what kinds of plays we’ve produced in the past and who our audience is.

Manuscripts are now being accepted via email. Scripts should be emailed to literary@eastwestplayers.org. Emailed versions of scripts are preferred.

Scripts should be submitted in a PDF format and must include the following:

1. A cover sheet, including your name, address, telephone number, website, and email address
2. A theatrical resume (two pages max) listing major productions, workshops, readings, commissions, publications, awards, education, and training information
3. A 100-word max synopsis of the play

Our Literary Committee will read all scripts we deem to be in line with the mission of the theater. Due to the large volume of submissions, we will only reach out to playwrights whose work we are interested in.

2019-20 Woodward/Newman Drama Award

BPP is now accepting submissions for the 2019-20 Woodward/Newman Drama Award.

Submissions must be postmarked by March 1, 2019. 

The winner will be announced in May/June 2019.

"Full-length" plays will have a complete running time of between 1 hour 15 minutes (75 minutes) to 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes).
Plays submitted must be unpublished at the time of submission. Plays that have received developmental readings, workshop productions, or productions at small theatre companies are acceptable. No scripts with previous productions at major regional theaters will be accepted. Once entered, subsequent activity does not change the acceptability of the script.
Each submission must include a synopsis (1 page or less) including the cast size. A separate page should include a brief bio of the playwright, and production/development history if applicable.


Each submission must include a cover letter with contact information and a $10.00 reader fee. Agent submissions require no fee. The fee will be waived for Dramatist Guild members with an enclosed photocopy of a membership card. The BPP only accepts U.S. checks or money orders (Make check payable to "BPP"). No international checks or money orders will be accepted.


It is preferable for musicals to include a demo CD. The complete score is not necessary but may be included. All plays are read by BPP's literary personnel led by and including the Literary Manager and Artistic Director.

We do not accept e-mail submissions. Scripts will not be returned. Blind submissions are not necessary. Please include all contact information. Plays submitted in previous years will be accepted.

The BPP reserves the right not to name a winner and/or name a winner but not commit to a reading or production.

East Valley Children’s Theatre is searching for aspiring playwrights to become a part of the theatre’s future seasons of performances. Contest rules and prizes are listed below.

  • All plays must be submitted to East Valley Children’s Theatre no later than March 1, 2019.

Production of Winning Play

Responsibility for final production of the play lies solely with Worthington Players.  The director will be chosen by the Executive staff of the Shawnee Playhouse.   No monetary prize or compensation is paid.

Each year, Worthington Players produces original submitted works of local and surrounding area playwrights.

PlayFest 2019 New Play Submissions

PlayFest 2019 will present readings of seven new plays during two weekends at the beginning of November 2019 in the Margeson Theater at Orlando Shakes. Each reading receives about 20 hours of rehearsal time with professional actors, director and a public reading–all with the playwright in attendance.

The seven plays will be selected from solicited and unsolicited scripts. We welcome submissions from agents and from PlayFest alumni as well as ten-page samples from unsolicited writers. If you are interested in submitting a play, please read the following guidelines carefully.

WHAT TYPES OF PLAYS ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We generally look for scripts with cast sizes of 1–8. We are especially interested in scripts that speak to the issues that our audiences are experiencing right now. Past PlayFest plays have dealt with issues of racism, autism, gender, Alzheimer’s, immigration, etc., sometimes set in contemporary times and sometime set in an historical context. Our Shakespeare and classical productions deal with “timeless issues” and we like for our new plays to deal with modern “issues of our times.” We seek plays of various genres by diverse writers with diverse characters.

“NEW PLAY” ELIGIBILITY
For a script to be eligible for inclusion in PlayFest 2019, a play does NOT have to be a world premiere, but it must be a “new” play. For our purposes, that means:


  • The play CANNOT have had more than two previous professional (AEA) productions before PlayFest 2019.
  • The play CANNOT have been published.
  • The play CANNOT have had an AEA production in New York City or Orlando.
  • Most importantly, the author must still be developing and working on the script. They must be available to join us in Orlando for one of the two PlayFest weeks.

If you are a playwright with no prior working relationship with Orlando Shakes and no agent, then you should submit a TEN-PAGE SAMPLE. (Do NOT send the full play but pick ten pages to submit along with the rest of the packet.) See below.

  • A brief bio about you (100-150 words)
  • A brief synopsis of the play (100-200 words)
  • A brief character breakdown (1-2 sentences that describe each character)
  • 10 pages from the script
  • You will receive a return email when your submission has been catalogued.
  • We plan to request full-length scripts from these samples by March 1, 2019.
  • Please send us your BEST consecutive ten pages, not necessarily the first ten. We want to be able to get a strong sense of your use of language and dialogue to tell your story. We do not have the staff necessary to read full unsolicited scripts, but we are excited to read your best 10 pages and will consider asking for your full script.

Every summer Capital Stage presents professional staged readings of new works through our new works festival PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. We seek submissions for new plays from December 1 – February 28.

Playwrights and Agents wishing to submit work should refer to our submission deadlines and criteria below.

As Sacramento’s leader of bold, thought-provoking theatre, Capital Stage created the PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. This series of staged readings seeks to identify and develop exciting new plays and playwrights. These new works are brought to theatrical life through a series of staged readings performed by professional actors in Capital Stage’s intimate theatre. Capital Stage invites audiences to take part in the new play development process by attending readings and participating in post-reading discussion.

Qualifications

Capital Stage is particularly interested in plays that fulfill our mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to the region. Plays must be full-length in any genre: comedy, drama, etc. Musicals, translations, collections of one-acts, children’s plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading or non-professional production are still eligible. Only one submission per playwright is allowed each year.

The Selection Process

Capital Stage’s competitive selection process consists of two rounds of selection. The first 350 play excerpts submitted during the first round are reviewed. Then, selected playwrights are asked to provide a full manuscript of their play. Finally, Capital Stage invites 4 to 6 playwrights to have their work included in PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION.

Preference will be given to those plays that are aligned with Capital Stage’s mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to our community.

How to Apply

Step 1. Complete the online submission form to provide Capital Stage with information about the playwright and the play.

Step 2. Email your script sample to literarymanager@capstage.org. In order to be accepted, your script sample must be submitted as a single PDF file that meets the following requirements.

File name must be “Author Last Name_Title of Play”
The first page(s) of the file must include: Title of play, character breakdown and descriptions, synopsis of the play
The following pages must be a 10-page sample of the play
DO NOT include the full name of the author on any pages
Please note: Agents submitting on behalf of a playwright may submit full-length manuscripts following these same instructions.

Some recommendations from our literary manager: Make sure that your synopsis sets the reader up to understand what is going on in your sample. Remember that the reader only has this synopsis and the ten pages that you provide to get to know your work, and that is difficult to do if they are confused about the plot. Also, make sure you are submitting the best ten pages of your work! The sample does not need to be the first ten pages of the play; you should select whichever 10-page section you think presents the best argument for why we should want to read the whole thing.

2019 Deadline: Submissions will be accepted only from December 1, 2018 – February 28, 2019. Local, national, and international playwrights are encouraged to submit. Only the first 350 submissions will be accepted.

14th Annual One Act Play Festival (OAPF)

Submission Guidelines: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays maximum.

Seeking Short Plays: Comedic, absurd, dramatic, satirical, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome for review. Works for actors of all ages (children thru seniors) and abilities are strongly encouraged. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island from July 11-27, 2019

Deadline for Submission: All plays must be received by Friday, April 12, 2019. Any plays received or postmarked past April 12th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.

Selected Plays for Performance: The One Act Play Festival (OAPF) Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by the end of May. Playwrights will receive notification only if their play(s) was/were selected for performance, and the selected plays will also be posted on the festival’s webpage. Playwrights will not be notified if their works were not accepted. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit with no performance/royalty fees.

Selected Playwrights: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales and submission fees will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the OAPF for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive at least two (2) complimentary tickets and recognition in the playbill and festival webpage, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided). Performances are not video recorded.

ICRL Playwriting Competition

Have you ever felt something calling you forward: a purpose towards which you are striving, something you were meant to achieve or become?  Did you know that the same principles of physics that describe causality have a second solution, one that describes how the present is influenced by future purposes just as it is influenced by past causes?

In 2015, the ICRL Press published a book by Ulisse Di Corpo and Antonella Vaninni that describes the phenomenon of syntropy, the complementary principle to entropy.  We at the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) regard this book, “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love”, as a vital resource for raising awareness of the phenomenon, and are seeking to expand our efforts into the performing arts.

We invite you to submit a script to the inaugural run of the “ICRL Playwriting Competition.” For this event, we are soliciting one-act scripts that can help raise awareness of the principle of syntropy, and its role in human experience.

Of the submissions, three scripts will be selected for monetary awards of $50 (third place), $100 (second place), and $200 (first place).  Depending on quality and suitability, the first place winner may be contracted to write a full-length play on the subject.

Also, if there are a sufficient number of quality submissions that are well-aligned with the message of “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” ICRL will select (approximately) five additional winners to create a one-acts production to be performed at a theater in the greater Baltimore region.

Competition Rules:

  • Scripts will be assessed based primarily on their ability to raise awareness of the principle of syntropy as described in Di Corpo’s and Vaninni’s book. This means the script should: a) clearly relate to and illustrate this topic; and b) do so in a way that will capture and retain an audience’s attention and interest.

  • Plays should be approximately 10-15 minutes in duration.
  • Aside from the above-mentioned focus on syntropy, there are no limitations on genre or style.
  • Each playwright may submit up to two scripts.
  • There is no entry fee to submit scripts.
  • While there aren’t strict formatting requirements, scripts that are difficult to read will be viewed less favorably (i.e. don’t hurt your chances by making your work difficult to follow).
  • Submissions will be judged blind, so scripts must not contain the playwright’s name or other identifying information.
  • Scripts are to be submitted electronically, as pdf files only, to submissions@icrl.org no later than 11:59 pm (east coast, GMT-5) on March 30, 2019. In the submission email, please include the playwright’s name, mailing address, email address, and the title of the script(s) being submitted.
  • We are aiming to announce the winners of the competition in early July, although the specific timetable will depend on the number of submissions received.
  • First, second, and third place awards of $50, $100, and $200 are guaranteed. The contracting of a full-length script from the first-place winner, as well as the determination of whether to produce a one-acts show with a Baltimore theater, is at the discretion of ICRL based on suitability of the submitted scripts.

Next Act! seeks full-length plays

Next Act!, now in its eighth year, is an expansion of Capital Repertory Theatre’s (theREP) commitment to the development of new work. At the same time, the weekend-long summit is designed to complement the Upper Hudson Valley’s rich diverse populations. Next Act! New Play Summit 8 will take place June 7-10, 2019 and will feature readings of four never-before produced plays, with additional special events throughout the weekend.

theREP is looking for scripts that use theatre to address injustices, inequities, and cultural collisions, providing a voice for the unheard on stage, in the workplace, the Capital Region and beyond. Scripts that engage art and social justice.
  • Accepting full length plays only.
  • (No Musicals.)
  • Multi-cultural and ethnically diverse pieces encouraged.
  • Comedy and Drama welcome!

ELIGIBILITY

Eligible plays cannot have been previously produced, though previous readings are allowed. No more than 7 characters. (Please do not submit works in which actors play multiple roles, unless it is a device used to illuminate generations.)

Plays previously submitted to Next Act will not be considered.

Agent and non-agent submissions accepted.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Playwrights should submit all materials in one document, either a Microsoft Word document or a PDF file, via email attachment. This document must include: a short one-paragraph synopsis – that illuminates the plays entire plot including its ending; the character descriptions and the first 10 pages (and only the first ten pages) of their play. Submission documents must be void of playwright’s name and contact information.

Submissions that do not conform to the guidelines stipulated will not be accepted.

These plays will be read and discussed in our Elephant Ears Reading Series readings, produced as audio plays in our podcast, The Trumpet, and then be produced as staged-readings in an evening-of-readings performance in October to support National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and Red Ribbon Week. A generous portion of proceeds from this production will be donated to a related organization to help end the opioid crisis.

  • Please make sure your name and title of your work appear on your submission.
  • An element of Jewish resonance is important, but your submission does not need to feature being Jewish as the prominent theme or subject.
  • Feature women or a woman’s point of view, but not exclusively. Male characters are welcome.
  • Short one-acts (10 minutes max) and monologues (7 minutes max) are preferred.  Will read full-length, but unlikely will produce.
  • 1500 words or less preferred
  • Must be topical for the 21st century. While we consider plays set in another time period, we mostly select contemporary pieces.
  • Small cast a must. One-person shows okay.
  • Previously produced or published work is welcome. Please include production and/or publication history. A new version of a classic or an adaptation from another medium would definitely be of interest.

Although the primary focus of JWT is on the writing, music is often a part of our events. We encourage composers, song-writers, and performers to submit individual work. Musicals are welcome.

Headwaters New Play Program

What kind of plays are we looking for? The Headwaters program is the source of new plays of the West. However, our definition of West is extremely broad. It may include plays set in the current, historic, or mythic western United States; plays that reflect the diverse cultures and experiences of the West; plays that examine the American urban/rural divide; and plays that completely re-imagine what “West” means.

To be considered for the Headwaters New Play Festival, a play must never have had a professional production and the playwright must be available to attend the workshop week (typically in late August).

Since 2015’s festival, our goal has been to more accurately reflect the diversity of human experience by reserving one of our two slots for women and playwrights of color. We are seeking full-length plays, musicals, and plays with music, one submission per playwright.

Submissions close when 250 scripts are received or February 17, 2019, whichever comes first.

Submissions are currently: OPEN.

Plays must be submitted digitally in PDF format. Hard copies will not be considered. We accept one play per playwright, and please do not resubmit a play from a previous year. Responses will be sent out sometime in May 2019. CRT provides travel, a food stipend, and cozy accommodations for the two finalist playwrights. The scenic mountain beauty of this remote and quaint arts town will provide endless inspiration as you develop your work. Plays read at the festival will be considered for full production in CRT’s 2020 season.
