Athena Project, located in Denver, Colorado, is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIPS). This Series is an opportunity for new plays to be developed in one of three models: concert or table readings and our workshops.

Rehearsals and presentation will take place in Denver at a location to be determined over the course of approximately March-April 2020. Three to six new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and basic design elements during presentations. Scripts are accepted from March 1 – April 15, 2019.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:

• Playwright must be a woman and may submit only ONE full-length script. Full-length is defined by at least 60 pages in standard playscript format.

• Previously un-produced plays only. Scripts with prior workshops, readings or academic productions are accepted, but the script should be revised for the playwright to get the most from this opportunity.

• Submission must include:

• a. BLIND script in PDF format – PAGE ONE of PDF script MUST have TITLE, CHARACTER BREAKDOWN & SYNOPSIS of script, 200 word limit (This file will contain NO playwright contact info*)

• b. Cover letter addressing: 1) what the playwright would like to accomplish working with a director, dramaturg and cast and 2) how she heard about the call for submissions

• c. Resume 

• Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.

• We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed, and for at least one performance at her own expense. We will select 3-6 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected. Travel stipends are offered.

Imagined Theatres seeks submissions

Imagined Theatres is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal and archive, dedicated to imagining what might be possible and impossible in the theatre.

We publish scripts, scores, stories, manifestoes, and essays, in prose and in verse. These texts are paired with a critical response, or “gloss,” extending the argument or view of each imagined theatre in new directions.

Imagined Theatres supports creative criticism, meaning creative work that acts critically and criticism that acts creatively. The journal releases issues annually, with thematic issues comprised of entries solicited from guest editors, and un-themed issues devoted to user submissions.

Submissions

We are currently accepting submissions for our first open call issue. The deadline for submissions to issue #03 will be March 1st, 2019.

Prospective authors are encouraged to explore the website, as well as the book Imagined Theatres, for a sense of possible approaches, bearing in mind that these are merely suggestions. We emphasize the written word, but are open to submissions that take advantage of the digital form in interesting ways.

Submissions should include 1-2 pieces. We encourage the publication of shorter work, though there is not prescribed word limit. While the themed issues pair each theatre with a response (or “gloss”), open submissions do not need to include glosses. Of course, you are welcome to submit both a theatre and its gloss if you would like. You are also welcome to submit independent glosses that respond to previously published texts; in this instance, please let us know which text you are referencing.

We accept submissions via email at submissions@imaginedtheatres.com. All submissions should include contact information, a brief contributor’s bio, and the word “submission” in the title of the email.

SCRIPT SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED TO APRIL 1, 2019.

• No fee is required.
• No restriction of theme or genre.
• Three (3) scripts submissions are allowed per playwright.
• Selected playwright winners will be awarded a cash prize of $100.00.

TO QUALIFY:

• You must be the sole African-American author of the submitted work.
• Playwright must publically and openly identify themselves as African-American, Black, or of the African diaspora.  
• Previously published or produced work by the author or theatre/company is not allowed (See definitions below).
• Play must run no longer than 8-10 minutes long on stage. Consider conducting an informal reading to ensure). 
• Play should accommodate a “bare-stage” set requiring only a minimum of removable stage props and require basic lighting and sound cues.     
• Play must not be a musical.    
• Play must not be written for children or youth. 
• Play must not contain characters that are under 17 years old.    
• Play must not be a re-submission of previous Fade To Black play festival seasons. 
• Play must not be considered a translation or adaptation.
• Play must not be a film. Screenplays will not be accepted.  
• Play should be "stand-alone", separate body of work that has not been extracted from a larger, previously written play.
• Author must be at least 18 years of age.  
• Play must be submitted in a PDF format. 

DEFINITIONS:

"Produced” - Your play was marketed for production date(s) by either you (its playwright) or a theatre company and was performed before an audience who purchased tickets to see the event.  

"Published" - Your play is an officially published work and commands royalties from the producing theater each time it is performed.

Staged readings (formal or informal) are not considered productions. If your play has only had public or private readings but has not been produced as a full-scale stage performance, you are permitted to submit the play.

FAQ

Q. My plays were performed for at no charge to the audience and I did not get paid. Are they eligible for submission? 
A: We diligently research all plays submitted to ensure compliance. Whether payment was received or not, if the performance is not considered as a "reading", it is ineligible for submission. All plays selected have been certified as world premiering new works.

Q: Am I required to attend the festival to have my play produced? 
A: No. You are not required to attend. Fade To Black will cover the full cost of producing, marketing and professionally filming your play.

Q: Will you pay for my travel to Houston, room, board, food, and transportation if I am a selected playwright? 
A: The experience of the Fade To Black Play Festivals is amazing! We encourage you to attend and meet the vast community of artists that will bring your play to life, but we are not able to cover cost outside of the $100.00 honorarium each winning playwright will receive at this time.

Q: Could you expound on "bare-stage"?
A: We have a relatively small area for prop/set piece storage. We must set and strike the stage within 30-60 seconds for each play so your play should be free of the need for excessive props, furniture and major appliances (i.e. stove, refrigerator).  Your play should be very easy to mount.

Q: My play takes place in several different locations, cuts across various chronological timeframes, has lavish special effects and involves a large number of extras. 
A: This may be seen as film disguised as a play. Ideally, your play should be set in one location and if absolutely necessary, one additional "implied location". It should have no more than 5-7 characters. Most things can be adapted for stage performance, but if your piece is really a film, it will not be accepted. You must adapt screenplays into a format that will perform well on stage.

Q: I have the appearance of children written into my play. Will this be OK?
A: No. Your play must not contain characters or extras under the age of 17.

Chagrin Valley Little Theatre THE 10-10 NEW PLAYS FESTIVAL

CVLT began the biennial 10-10 Festival in 2009, putting out the call for short plays to be performed at its River Street Playhouse, the smaller venue adjacent to the main theater building. Ten plays would be chosen, each lasting roughly ten minutes. The first 10-10 that July was a resounding success, receiving submissions from all over Northeast Ohio and beyond. Following years’ events were equally popular.

Now The 10-10 is back for its sixth edition!

Summer Shorts 2019

Throughline Artists is currently accepting submissions for the 13th season of SUMMER SHORTS, an annual festival of new American short plays, to be held this summer at 59E59 Theaters in Manhattan.

Playwrights in the tri-state area are encouraged to submit previously unproduced one-act plays between 20 – 30 minutes in length. Six plays will be selected for production in July/August. Playwrights will be notified of selection by May 1st.

Please read our submission guidelines carefully. Plays that do not adhere to these rules will not be considered.

Curtis Theatre Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival

The Curtis Theatre announces a call for submissions to the inaugural Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival. This year's theme, “That’s What She Said”, aims to provide a platform for the female voice. Staged readings will run August 30 – September 1, 2019.

Page to Stage will feature one-act and full-length plays. The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2019.

Submissions are open to all playwrights with an emphasis on Southern California based artists. Writers interested in submitting plays should send finished scripts to PagetoStage2019@gmail.com with “Festival Play Submission” and the play title in the subject line. Included in the e-mail should be the playwright’s name, contact information, and a two-sentence synopsis of the play. There is no submission fee.

The purpose of the Page to Stage Playwright’s Festival is to nurture new plays and new playwrights by working with local burgeoning writers and to showcase their works for audiences in our community. Selected plays will be presented as staged readings on the Curtis Theatre stage as part of the 2019/2020 Season. The Curtis Theatre will also use the festival to find and develop material for future seasons. Authors whose manuscripts are selected will receive an honorarium, a written critique from a professional dramaturge, a DVD of the staged reading, and participation in a post-show audience discussion.

The 2019 festival is produced in partnership with Project La Femme. Project La Femme is committed to creating art that challenges dialogue while promoting and amplifying artists who produce socially engaging art projects. Their mission is to create and explore images and definitions of women through diversity, inclusiveness, and honesty.

Pre-submission writers' workshops will be offered in the evenings on February 21 and April 4, 2019. Actors' auditions are scheduled for August 5 & 6, 2019. Beverly Hills Theatre Guild - Youth Theatre Competition

The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild annually sponsors the Competition for Youth Theatre to discover new theatrical works and to encourage established or emerging writers to create quality works for youth theatre. The Play Competition for Youth Theatre represents grades 6-8 and grades 9-12 and offers two prizes:

FIRST PRIZE: $1,200
SECOND PRIZE: $600

Entries must be accompanied by the application form and in accordance with the submission policies and procedures. We accept scripts from January 15th to February 28th for this competition. No scripts will be accepted after these dates and all scripts received after the deadline cannot qualify and will not be returned.

Rules for the Play Competition for Youth Theatre

1. The Michael J. Libow Awards consist of two (2) monetary prizes for plays suitable for grades 6-8 (middle school) or for plays suitable for grades 9-12 (high school). The two prizes will be awarded on the merits of the play scripts, which includes its suitability for the intended audience. The plays should be approximately 45 to 75 minutes in length. There is no production connected to any of the prizes, though a staged reading is optional at the discretion of the BHTG.

2. Authors must be U.S. Citizens or legal residents. Co-Authorships are permissible.

3. The plays must be written in Standard American English. Slang, jargon, and regional dialects, etc., may be used only to establish necessary characterization.

4. Authors may enter up to two (2) scripts in the Play Competition for Youth Theatre.

5. Entries must be unpublished, theatrical works written for the living stage and suitable for the grades designated. Play scripts may have had one (1) non-professional or educational theatre production. But the play may not have been produced on a professional level for which authors, actors or staff were paid.

6. Entries may be original plays, adaptations and/or translations. Authors of adaptations and/or translations of works that are under current copyright must provide (upon request) proof of permission from the copyright holder(s) or their legal agents to use such works.

7. Plays shorter than approximately 45 minutes are not eligible; musicals are not eligible; and plays entered in previous BHTG Competitions are not eligible. (Please note: plays with music, i.e. plays with an occasional interpolated song, are eligible: works that are designated as musicals are not.)

8. Submissions received with postmarks BEFORE January 15th or AFTER the last day of February of the contest year will not be accepted, read or returned. Authors will be notified of ineligible submission and the reasons why.

9. Submissions in noncompliance of these Rules and the Submission Procedures will be ineligible.

10. BHTG has the right to accept or reject any entry without explanation, and will not correspond with, or discuss with, any person the results of the competition, or the acceptance or rejection of any entry.

11. The competition judges' decisions are final in all respects.

12. BHTG has the following rights which it may exercise at its sole discretion:

a. To declare any entry ineligible if prior to Competition's close (June 1) the entry is in violation of rule #6. Authors must notify the BHTG of any change in status.

b. To reproduce as many copies of an entry as are necessary for distribution among the judges.

c. To use the author's name and title of any entry receiving an award for publicity about this Playwright Award and the results of the competition.

d. To present one script-in-hand, rehearsed readings of an award winning entry to an invited, nonpaying audience. No royalty payment will be due to the entry's author for these readings.

13. Each award winner will, at all times, in connection with publications, production, publicity, advertisements, etc. about the award winning entry, designate that the play is an "Award Winner of The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild/Youth Theatre Competition."

14. Each entry will be free from copyright restrictions relating to this Award, and the author will hold the BHTG, its officers, and directors free and harmless from all copyright claims and violations.

15. The BHTG is not a producing organization. No production is connected with the competition nor any prize awarded.

16. Sorry, the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild - Youth Theatre Competition does not sponsor scholarships, fellowships, educational grants, or loans to students or private individuals. Nor does the Beverly Hills Theatre Guild as an organization.


Submission Procedures

1. Each entry must be accompanied by an individual, completed application/entry form. Application forms may be duplicated as necessary. Application forms and Competition rules and Submission Procedures may be obtained by sending #10 business-sized SASE to the address below.

2. Each author must personally sign the application. Entries must be legible and signature clearly the name of the writer(s). The author(s) must sign the entry form. Proxy or agent signatures are not accepted and will lead to disqualification.

3. Bind your entry securely and include a title page with the name of the play, whether it is an "original" or an adaptation/translation from another work, and, if desired, copyright or registration information and date (instead of the author's name, please use "by the author.") On the second page list all characters, time, place, number of acts and scenes, and any other pertinent information such as whether the scripts make use of special effects, e.g., puppetry. Scripts must be bound. A clip holding pages together unfortunately doesn't constitute being "bound". (This is insisted upon for the protection of the script and benefit of the writer. Loose scripts may have pages become misplaced or lost. The competition is not responsible for loss or damage to entries or parts thereof.)

4. Do not show your name, address or any identifying information on any page of your entry. Attach with a removable paper clip, a sheet containing the title of your entry, your name, address, phone number and any other information.

5. To preserve anonymity, all entries will be identified by numbers for judging. All identifying marks will be removed.

6. Submissions will not be returned. This includes either eligible or ineligible submissions. Enclose with your submission a #10 business-sized SASE for our response.

7. You may enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard for acknowledgment of receipt of your entry. Competition winners to be announced on this web site in June.

8. The BHTG is not responsible for loss or damage to entries.

9. No script will be accepted by fax or e-mail. No electronic submissions or correspondence.

North Park Playwright Festival 2019

1.  Short new plays (no more than 12 pages, less is fine) that are easily staged and have casts with no more than four people.  Our theater is very small and we normally use a minimal set concept in this festival.  We have to be able to change sets in just a few minutes as we do six to seven plays each evening of the festival.  We don't have space for large casts.

2.  We request new work.   A play that has had workshops or one or two previous productions is OK, but we are not interested in work that has been produced in numerous other places.  Our goal in building the theater was to have a place to produce brand new work and let playwrights have a chance to see their work done for the first time.

3.  We seek complete plays rather than excerpts from a larger work.

4.  Work will be chosen by the directors we have in the festival.  It is not a "contest" and we are not really judging plays in the formal sense.  The directors choose the plays we will produce, within the production budget guidelines we give them.

5.  Most subject matter is OK.  We don't do nudity or off color humor.

6.  We ask that all submissions be sent to us via snail mail at the theater.  Address is: North Park Vaudeville and Candy Shoppe, 2031 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego, CA 92104, Attn Summer Golden, Artistic Director.  We have too much trouble with differing email, word processing, and computer platform issues to take them via email.  Additionally, our selection process requires the directors read the plays submitted and the cost of printing all the plays we receive each year is prohibitive.  Please insure submissions have a title page with complete contact information (including email), a character summary, and are in proper script form.  There is no charge to enter.

7.  Submissions must be postmarked by June 30, 2019.  Please do not send plays by any method that requires a signature from us. We are not often at the theater when delivery occurs.  We will email notice of receipt to all playwrights submitting plays.

8.  Send only one script.  Multiple submissions do not increase chances of production.

General information:

We are trying to support new work and involve actors, playwrights, and directors of all experience levels. We have had a wide variety of artists involved from very experienced to first time directors and actors, to an 8 year old playwright (very short, well received play).  We feel having a wide range of experience involved helps the new people learn from the more experienced.

Studio Players, Kentucky’s Oldest Community-Involved Theater, located in Lexington, has produced 5 solid, exciting years of engaging, thought-provoking and sometimes hilarious theater, in the form of our 10-minute play festival.  

That said, we are  proud to announce our 6th Annual 10-Minute Play Festival, to be performed in July 2019. 

We are looking for 7 strong, entertaining plays to feature so, once again, we are holding a competition. This competition is for 10-minute plays only; it is open to any playwright.  

 The judges will be members of the Studio Players theater community: board members, directors and patrons.

The rules are simple and are as follows:

1. 
Any playwright may enter; only one script per playwright.
2. The play must be a 10 minute play (meaning it will be approximately 10 pages long).

3. All plays should be emailed, with a separate cover page, with: play's title, author's name, email address, mailing address and phone number. The play itself should only have the title; no identifying information contained in or on the 10 page script.

4. To be considered, each script must be received by March 10th.

5. The contest is open to the first 300 entries received.

6. Winning entrants agree to a full production of their scripts, including a video recording of the production with possible publication on youtube.


That's it! The top 7 scripts (as determined by the judges) will be performed by active members of the Bluegrass theater community. 

Each play will be a fully realized, staged production; each performance showing all winning scripts.  The 7 Selected playwrights will each receive $250 in prize money.

Theatre Southwest of Houston, Texas is now accepting entries from now until March 15, 2019 for the 22th Annual  Theatre Southwest Festival of Originals! The TSW-FOO is FREE to enter and will once again be calling for short one act (20 minute) plays in any and all genres from all over the country and the world. Submission Guidelines:

Each playwright may submit up to 2 plays for consideration.

All entries should be unpublished and previously unproduced in the Houston area.

Monologues or One Actor plays are not accepted.

Plays should be 20 minutes in length (give or take a minute or two). Page count should be no less than 17, but no more than 22 pages.

There is no maximum limit of characters or sets, but common sense should be used as 5 plays will be produced in one evening.

Number all pages of the scripts, and scripts should be securely bound or stapled in the upper left hand corner.

Helen McCloy Scholarship 2019

What Is It? The Helen McCloy/MWA Scholarship for Mystery Writing seeks to nurture talent in mystery writing—in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.

Who May Apply? The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents only. Membership in Mystery Writers of America is not required to apply. The McCloy Scholarship is intended for serious aspiring mystery writers who wish to improve their writing skills. Applicants should not have received monetary compensation for novels, short stories, non-fiction, screenplays or play scripts in the crime-writing genre.

How Shall the Scholarship Be Used? The scholarship shall be used to offset tuition and fees for writing workshops, writing seminars, or university/college-level writing programs taking place in the U.S. in summer, fall or winter of 2019 or early spring 2020. Applicants must select a specific writing class/workshop/seminar to which scholarship funds would be applied.  To be eligible, the chosen writing program must require the applicant to produce writing and to have writing critiqued. Writing conferences featuring only panels and agent conferences are not eligible.

 What Is the Scholarship Amount? MWA will present two scholarships for up to $500 each. Scholarship checks are issued in late Spring and are made out jointly to scholarship winners and their chosen educational institutions.

 Submission Details Applicants are required to submit:

* ONE copy of the official description of the writing class/workshop/program (from college catalog, workshop brochure, or other.)

Little Fish Theatre in San Pedro, CA, is looking for two to three short plays (12 minutes or less) to stage for a one-night-only event on International Beer Day, Sunday April 7th. The theater would like to award each play selected with a $25 royalty for the playwright.

The 4th Annual A Light in Dark Places seeks plays

The 4th annual A Light in Dark Places: A Collection of Plays for Hope in accordance with National Suicide Prevention Week seeks short plays.

Selected plays will receive a six-performance run and a $50 prize.

Performances will be the weekends of Sept. 6th-8th & Sept. 13th-15th at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting & Theatre – Los Angeles in Hollywood.

ALIDP is a nonprofit that uses the arts to bring understanding, resources and hope to those affected by suicide. The plays are to explore the theme of Suicide Prevention with a focus on areas such as the experience of living with mental health conditions, healthy conversations about mental health, suicide loss survivors, and resources for those in need.

Please see the accompanying.pdf produced by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which will provide some guidance on how these issues may best be safely addressed.

Up to six plays will be selected from the submissions.

Selections will be announced no later than May 15th, directors will then be assigned, and casting will commence in August. A four-week rehearsal period is expected.

Take Ten Festival seeks 10-minute plays

Between Us Productions is seeking 10 minute plays for its 7th annual Take Ten Festival, April 8th - 14th at the Workshop Theater Company’s Jewelbox Theater.

Winner will receive a cash prize and a workshop of a longer production produced by Between Us Productions. Tech rehearsals are daytime on Monday April 8th & 9th. You will receive 2 performances in the evening April 9th - 12th with possible performances on the 13th & 14th (maximum of 4). Between Us Productions will provide performance space, 45 mins to 1 Hour of tech time, a board op, and general festival marketing.

There is no fee to submit, but there is a $150 fee to participate.

Every summer Capital Stage presents professional staged readings of new works through our new works festival PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. We seek submissions for new plays from December 1 – February 28.

Playwrights and Agents wishing to submit work should refer to our submission deadlines and criteria below.

Please note: Only submissions that follow the steps below will be accepted.

As Sacramento’s leader of bold, thought-provoking theatre, Capital Stage created the PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION. This series of staged readings seeks to identify and develop exciting new plays and playwrights. These new works are brought to theatrical life through a series of staged readings performed by professional actors in Capital Stage’s intimate theatre. Capital Stage invites audiences to take part in the new play development process by attending readings and participating in post-reading discussion.

Qualifications

Capital Stage is particularly interested in plays that fulfill our mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to the region. Plays must be full-length in any genre: comedy, drama, etc. Musicals, translations, collections of one-acts, children’s plays and any play that has received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission are not eligible. Plays that have had a workshop, reading or non-professional production are still eligible. Only one submission per playwright is allowed each year.

The Selection Process

Capital Stage’s competitive selection process consists of two rounds of selection. The first 350 play excerpts submitted during the first round are reviewed. Then, selected playwrights are asked to provide a full manuscript of their play. Finally, Capital Stage invites 4 to 6 playwrights to have their work included in PLAYWRIGHTS’ REVOLUTION.

Preference will be given to those plays that are aligned with Capital Stage’s mission to bring bold, thought-provoking work to our community.

How to Apply

Step 1. Complete the online submission form to provide Capital Stage with information about the playwright and the play.

Step 2. Email your script sample to literarymanager@capstage.org. In order to be accepted, your script sample must be submitted as a single PDF file that meets the following requirements.

File name must be “Author Last Name_Title of Play”
The first page(s) of the file must include: Title of play, character breakdown and descriptions, synopsis of the play
The following pages must be a 10-page sample of the play
DO NOT include the full name of the author on any pages
Please note: Agents submitting on behalf of a playwright may submit full-length manuscripts following these same instructions.

Some recommendations from our literary manager: Make sure that your synopsis sets the reader up to understand what is going on in your sample. Remember that the reader only has this synopsis and the ten pages that you provide to get to know your work, and that is difficult to do if they are confused about the plot. Also, make sure you are submitting the best ten pages of your work! The sample does not need to be the first ten pages of the play; you should select whichever 10-page section you think presents the best argument for why we should want to read the whole thing.

2019 Deadline: Submissions will be accepted only from December 1, 2018 – February 28, 2019. Local, national, and international playwrights are encouraged to submit. Only the first 350 submissions will be accepted.

Submission Guidelines: Plays should be original, short one act plays; ideal length 10-15 minutes with 20-minute maximum. Previously produced plays acceptable. Playwrights may submit up to three (3) plays maximum.

Seeking Short Plays: Comedic, absurd, dramatic, satirical, farcical, musical, etc. are all welcome for review. Works for actors of all ages (children thru seniors) and abilities are strongly encouraged. Selected plays will be performed at Theatre 82 in Cranston, Rhode Island from July 11-27, 2019

Deadline for Submission: All plays must be received by Friday, April 12, 2019. Any plays received or postmarked past April 12th will not be accepted for review. Plays will be reviewed and judged by a panel of community directors and actors on their artistic and technical merits, and collectively decided on whether they are “selected for performance” or “not selected.” Total number of selected plays is TBD, based on factors including number of submissions, length of plays, etc.

Selected Plays for Performance: The One Act Play Festival (OAPF) Panel will finalize and announce all selected plays for performance by the end of May. Playwrights will receive notification only if their play(s) was/were selected for performance, and the selected plays will also be posted on the festival’s webpage. By submitting works, playwrights agree to allow Artists’ Exchange to produce their play(s) in the festival for the public’s entertainment and benefit with no performance/royalty fees.

Selected Playwrights: Participation is volunteer; no stipends or monetary prizes are awarded to selected playwrights. All monies collected from ticket sales and submission fees will benefit Artists’ Exchange/Gateways to Change, Inc. and the continuation of the OAPF for years to come. Selected playwrights will receive at least two (2) complimentary tickets and recognition in the playbill and festival webpage, including a personal bio and contact information (if provided). Performances are not video recorded.

The UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance seeks from all enrolled undergraduate students submissions of previously unproduced, unpublished scripts highlighting the African-American experience in contemporary or historical terms. Adaptations from books and other forms are not allowed.

Prize:

A $1000 honorarium will be awarded to the winning playwright.

A staged reading of the winning script on May 12th, 2019, in the Wagner New Play Festival attended by national theatre professionals.

Travel and housing cost to and from UC San Diego to be present for the performance.

Adjudication:

Finalists and the eventual winners will be selected by a team comprised of the faculty and staff of UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance and invited judges from other theatre facilities, the professional theatre, local media or the UCSD student body.

The decision of the team of adjudicators is final. The UCSD Department of Theatre and Dance reserves the right to select no winner.

Guidelines:

Scripts must be original, unpublished, unproduced and free of royalty and copyright restrictions. Plays which have staged readings are acceptable.

Scripts must be 50 pages or longer, typed. Manuscripts must be submitted electronically.

Deadline for entry Friday, April 13th, 2019. 

The winner will be announced by April 27th, 2019.

TASN Short Play Festival 2019

The Actors Studio of Newburyport, MA is dedicated to new play development and will be holding its second annual Short Play Festival for two weekends, and six performances, in October, 2019. The Submission window opens on January 1, 2019 and closes on March 1, 2019, or until three hundred plays have been received, whichever occurs first.

Our judges will participate in multiple rounds of reading, scoring, and debating and after 24 semi-finalists are chosen, we will hold an all-day Selection Sunday, putting all 24 semi-finalists on their feet. The eight winners will be announced in June 2019, with he top-scoring play receiving the coveted Clopton Prize.

Length: 5-15 minutes. Send us your best. There is no theme and no restrictions on content.
Workshops, readings, and one or two previous productions are okay.

Limit: One play per playwright. There is no fee to submit though we ask for an optional $5.00 donation per submission. TASN is non-profit and your tax deductible donation will be used to help defray the cost of producing this Festival which is dedicated to the development of New Work.

Submitting is a two-step process.

Sprout Works Harvest Festival seeks short plays

Sprout Works is seeking submissions for our inaugural short play series, THE HARVEST FESTIVAL

With this night of fully staged new works we strive to elevate playwrights, cultivate collaborative spirit, and join good plays with good people.

Sprout Works is a theatrical production company based in NYC geared toward the creation of new works, community growth, and providing professional opportunities to early career artists.

We are particularly interested in works by female identifying and gender nonconforming individuals, playwrights of color, and queer artists.

GUIDELINES
Manuscripts cannot exceed 18 pages and must be unpublished works.  Short plays are preferred, but excerpts from longer plays may be considered.  Current versions of plays cannot have been previously staged.  Extensive set or props may need to be pared down for the purposes of this production.  We strongly value the privilege and process of development and want to give playwrights the opportunity to work with directors in the rehearsal room, therefore preference will be given to NYC based writers.

ELIGIBILITY

JET encourages all playwrights over 18 to submit their work. JET's programming generally reflects issues of social conscience and human rights both in drama and comedy. Use our past productions as a guide and if you have questions, contact us at 248-788-2900.

Entry must be a full length original work or adaptation with a minimum running time of 85 minutes that has not been produced prior to the festival in 2020. Cast size of 10 or less is preferred. Staged readings/workshop productions are not disqualifying factors.

SCRIPTS
Submit a copy of your script, securely bound, typed in standard play format, with pages numbered. Include a list of characters/descriptions, scene breakdown, and a brief synopsis of your play. Your script(s) should be accompanied by a cover letter, including playwright contact information (name, address, phone number, e-mail address) and resume. Musicals must include a demo CD. If applicable, also submit a photocopy of your Dramatists Guild membership card.

The acceptable electronic format is an Adobe PDF file.

Please note that entries that do not comply with our guidelines will not be accepted. If you would like acknowledgement of receipt please attach a self addressed stamped postcard.

CONSENT
The playwright gives the Jewish Ensemble Theatre permission to photocopy scripts for reading/production purposes. Should your script be selected as one of the finalists, you are encouraged to attend the readings and talk backs.

The finalists award the Jewish Ensemble Theatre the option to produce any of the finalist plays as part of its main stage season. Finalists must acknowledge the Jewish Ensemble Theatre if/when the script is published

AWARDS
Each of the four finalists will receive a $250 honorarium. No other expenses will be paid.

SELECTION PROCESS
Each entry is guaranteed a minimum of 2 evaluations. The committee narrows down the entries to 15 – 20, which are read by the entire committee who then select the finalists.

The Acadiana Repertory Theatre, celebrating our 10th anniversary in 2020, is committed to serve playwrights as a place where they feel they can develop work with a company that has a desire to help in the growth of both the playwright and the play. We strive to create a safe, creative, open environment for our playwrights and, using our own experience, along with the experiences of some of our friends from across the country, we seek to help playwrights create and develop shows that have the best chance of a long life of production. Through developmental readings, developmental productions, and soon, the possibilities of residences, we hope to help, through working with the amazing playwrights we come in contact with, the voices of new American playwrights be heard.

We are now accepting submissions for our 2019 Season, which kicks off in in early February. We accept submissions of full length plays and musicals. In order to be eligible for consideration, submissions:
-Should be no longer than 90 minutes (we occasionally make exceptions)
-Should be full length.
-Should be actor/story forward
-Have minimal technical and set requirements
-Have a cast no larger than 10

10-15 MIN PLAYWRITING COMPETITION - “SYNTROPY: THE SPIRIT OF LOVE"

Have you ever felt something calling you forward: a purpose towards which you are striving, something you were meant to achieve or become? Did you know that the same principles of physics that describe causality have a second solution, one that describes how the present is influenced by future purposes just as it is influenced by past causes?

In 2015, the ICRL Press published a book by Ulisse Di Corpo and Antonella Vaninni that describes the phenomenon of syntropy, the complementary principle to entropy. We at the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) regard this book, “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” as a vital resource for raising awareness of the phenomenon, and are seeking to expand our efforts into the performing arts.

We invite you to submit a script to the inaugural run of the “ICRL Playwriting Competition.” For this event, we are soliciting one-act scripts that can help raise awareness of the principle of syntropy, and its role in human experience. Of the submissions, three scripts will be selected for monetary awards of $50 (third place), $100 (second place), and $200 (first place). Depending on quality and suitability, the first place winner may be contracted to write a full-length play on the subject.

Also, if there are a sufficient number of quality submissions that are well-aligned with the message of “Syntropy: The Spirit of Love,” ICRL will select (approximately) five additional winners to create a one-acts production to be performed at a theater in the greater Baltimore region.

Competition Rules:

• Scripts will be assessed based primarily on their ability to raise awareness of the principle of syntropy as described in Di Corpo’s and Vaninni’s book. This means the script should: a) clearly relate to and illustrate this topic; and b) do so in a way that will capture and retain an audience’s attention and interest.   Additional information about the book can be found here.
• Plays should be approximately 10-15 minutes in duration.
• Aside from the above-mentioned focus on syntropy, there are no limitations on genre or style.
• Each playwright may submit up to two scripts.
• There is no entry fee to submit scripts.
• While there aren’t strict formatting requirements, scripts that are difficult to read will be viewed less favorably (i.e. don’t hurt your chances by making your work difficult to follow).
• Submissions will be judged blind, so scripts must not contain the playwright’s name or other identifying information.
•  Scripts are to be submitted electronically to submissions@icrl.org no later than 11:59 pm (east coast, GMT-5) on March 30, 2019. In the submission email, please include the playwright’s name, mailing address, email address, and the title of the script(s) being submitted.
• We are aiming to announce the winners of the competition in early July, although the specific timetable will depend on the number of submissions received.
• First, second, and third place awards of $50, $100, and $200 are guaranteed. The contracting of a full-length script from the first-place winner, as well as the determination of whether to produce a one-acts show with a Baltimore theater, is at the discretion of ICRL based on suitability of the submitted scripts.

TheatreWorks 10 Minute Play Festival

TheatreWorks is accepting submissions for our First Annual 10 Minute Play Festival, "Tales from the Brookside." Submissions MUST be sent via this form NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 14th, 2019. Only submissions sent this way will be accepted. The festival will be held at TheatreWorks New Milford (5 Brookside Avenue, New Milford, CT 06776) June 4 through 8, 2019.

• A total of twenty 10 minute plays will be selected by our panel of judges from among those submitted.
• TW Playwrights Workshop, held each Wednesday at 7:00pm at the theatre, is available to help further development of your play. Our doors are open to everyone.
• The twenty selected plays will be presented once on one of the first three performance dates (Tues. June 4th, Wed. 5th or Thurs. 6th at 8:00 pm).
• Two plays from each night will move into the semi-finals on Friday June 7th at 8:00pm. Four plays will be chosen from the semi-final performances for the finals on Saturday June 8th at 8:00pm.
• CASH PRIZES will be awarded to the winners in each category (more to follow as we approach the event)

Rules

Playwrights (or their representatives) are responsible for the production of their plays-including casting, rehearsals, props, etc. TheatreWorks New Milford will provide limited set pieces, lighting/sound equipment and the production staff.

Submissions MUST be received NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 14th, 2019 an typed in standard play-script format, and be no more than ten (10) pages in a font size no smaller than 12-point.  Only plays with running times of ten (10) minutes or less will be eligible for prizes. Plays that run beyond 10 minutes may be subject to disqualification.

Submissions MUST include playwright contact info on the title page. Judging is based on audience/panel of judges combination.

Selectees will be notified BY MARCH 15th, 2019.

Early submissions may receive early notification.

A maximum of two submissions per playwright will be accepted.

The MAP Fund invests in artistic production as the critical foundation of imagining — and ultimately co-creating — a more equitable and vibrant society. MAP awards $1 million annually to up to 40 projects in the range of $10,000 – $45,000 per grant.

MAP supports original live performance projects that embody a spirit of deep inquiry, particularly works created by artists who question, disrupt, complicate, and challenge inherited notions of social and cultural hierarchy across the United States. Funded projects address these concerns through the processes of creating and distributing live performance to the public, and/or through the content and themes of the work itself. MAP is committed to intersectional anti-racism, and does not support cultural appropriation or oppressive project language, structures, or content.

The program pursues its mission by annually welcoming applications for new live performance projects. Each year, MAP hires a different cohort of peer reviewers who recommend the projects they believe most align with MAP’s goals through a rigorous, facilitated review process.

proposals will not be not accepted for any reason.

THE 10-10 NEW PLAYS FESTIVAL

CVLT began the biennial 10-10 Festival in 2009, putting out the call for short plays to be performed at its River Street Playhouse, the smaller venue adjacent to the main theater building. Ten plays would be chosen, each lasting roughly ten minutes. The first 10-10 that July was a resounding success, receiving submissions from all over Northeast Ohio and beyond. Following years’ events were equally popular.
